NEW WORD: SHOPPING-STRESS

We were screaming and squealing enthusiastically for at least fifteen minutes when the invitation to the exclusive Isabel Marant for H&M pre-sale reached our mailboxes. YES, we can shop without having to risk our lives in the queue on the Dam at 06:00 in the morning. I saw Nicolette van Dam’s Instagrammie on my way there yesterday evening. Nicolette, Leontien, Wendy, Froukje, Patty — they were all there. We got bracelets near the entrance which afforded us 25 minutes of shopping time. We could feel the tension rise and when the first group was sent to work, group two — our group — was ready, set and about to go. With cocktail in hand, bien sûr.

I froze amongst the swarming activity and really didn’t feel like buying anything at all any more.

We’d already thought about what we wanted in advance. I was set on getting the boots with fringes, the grey sweater, the shimmering skirt and the dress — but only if the fabric felt nice. When it was our turn, we all ran inside in a straight line to all the racks and I witnessed within no time how everyone accumulated big piles of clothing. I had nothing in my hands. I repeat: nothing. What was wrong with me? This couldn’t be true. I froze amongst the swarming activity and really didn’t feel like buying anything at all any more. Shopping with others, especially on a clock is difficult. I’m also always horrible at sample sales. And by the way, everything’s still kind of expensive. The dress was a 100 euros, skirt 70, the boots 200, the sweater 50, so, well, taken together that’s still a considerable amount. Wouldn’t I rather buy a new Marc Jacobs bag for that amount of money? But I can’t leave without buying something. I just can’t.

Jet and May-Britt agreed. You háve to buy something, they said. “Here, maybe this children’s sweater,” May-Britt suggested bravely. I decided to take it as a compliment, but clothing for twelve-year-olds fitted me when I was twelve. Meanwhile, our 25 minutes are almost up, and I had to take action now, now, now. I decided on the sweater. But the one from the men’s department, because it’s extra large and even more comfortable. I’m wearing it as I’m writing this and honestly, it’s divine. I won’t ever take it off again. So, in the end, thanks May and Jet for the support, and thanks Isabel for the lovely sweater.
