DO THE JACKIE DO
yourself!
When you think of Jackie, you think of sunglasses, pearls, a sassy short dress and that lovely hair, right? I’ve already dressed myself in a couple of her outfits and I even wore a pearl necklace, so it was time to ask hairstylist Rachel Geerman at The Building to give me a coupe Jackie today. Please do try this at home. Are you ready? Here we go.
1. Wash your hair thoroughly with a good and volumising shampoo. Rachel washes my hair with Redken’s Body Full.
2. Apply a generous amount of foam to your hair and even it out over your entire scalp (use, for example, Redken’s Full Effect).
3. And the blow-drying begins. First of all, make sure you use a blow-dryer that gets really hot. That’s more important than those with a lot of power (according to Rachel though, but she knows this stuff, I don’t). Rachel likes the Chi blow-dryer best, but Philips has very good ones too. For more information ask the store. Furthermore, it’s important to blow-dry against the grain to make sure you get a lot of volume. Just hang topsy-turvy whilst blow-drying, it helps. I know from experience.
4. Part your hair in four sections: two sides, one back and one top. Rachel dries my hair and rolls a brush through it (roll towards the inside), but you can also use rollers from the HEMA or a Carmenset. I presume that you don’t have nine blow-dry brushes at home (neither do I).
5. Whilst she’s blow-drying, Rachel burns quite the hole in the ozone layer with Redken’s Control Addict number 28.
6. The topside of my hair is treated with Redken’s Quick Tease, a product that makes your hair really stiff and somewhat fixed. Perfect for le toupage about to follow next.
7. When all my locks are treated, we use a quarter of the can of hairspray after which all the brushes are removed. My hair already looks quite nice, actually. Perfect, I’d say, but Rachel isn’t completely satisfied yet.
8. Rachel does the finishing touches with my head hanging down. She then takes a teasing brush…
Rachel is a top stylist so she bought hers in Paris, but fear not, Skins Cosmetics sells teasing brushes too.
9. The teased hair is brushed out softly, every lock placed in the ideal position. Rachel pulls everything a bit up by using the comb’s pin (could she do my breasts whilst she’s at it?) and tops everything off with Redken’s firm hairspray, Force Full, number 23, please.
10. And then I’m done. Jackie-ish. I feel a bit overhaired (the hair equivalent of overdressed) when I walk towards Stadionweg, but I received so many compliments today that I’m going to try it myself tomorrow.
