KATE YOUNG
If Jennifer Aniston got a different haircut and also a helix (an auricle piercing) then you know that ‘something’ lifechanging is happening. What’s the case? A brand new stylist. She goes by the name of Kate Young and she’s earned a spot in The Hollywood Reporter’s top 5 most influential stylists of the world.
I think Kate is a gorgeous woman. With her ashy blondie-ish hair, her signature style (usually in black, and often with Phillip Lim because that’s her bestie), and her ability to self-mock. “My first design piece I bought when I was in Paris without my parents. Satin trousers with orange dots. Ridiculously ugly, but I hold on to them for nostalgic value.”
Her cool Brooklyn apartment (where she lives with her husband and sons) is a wonderful, raw collection of books, art, and fashion. Kate thinks you can’t learn about fashion only by being able to pair up designers with the houses they work for. “Fashion is more than that. You’ve got to dive into art and books to be able to surprise.”
You might know Kate as Anna Wintour’s assistant and Vogue’s fashion editor Tonne Goodman, but mostly as Natalie Portman’s stylist (still remember that white origami Givenchy?), and Michelle Williams (in her yellow Vera Wang at the Oscars; she was her prettiest self. Ever).
I like Rachel Zoe, but now that she’s enjoying her new baby boy, I’m going to look at Kate. Because 2014 is going to be her year. Period.
Kate’s tips are simple but really true.
- Get real with your body. “Your body is the starting point, and you can’t change anything about that, it’s all you got. Really try to see what looks nice and work from there.
- If you want an edgy, modern look, then be critical. “If you like something immediately, normally speaking, it’s become boring an hour later. You’ve got to challenge yourself, and try on things you don’t already know beforehand whether you’d like it.
