PRESIDENT JENNA

I would be in love with Jenna Lyons if I were a man. God, I like her. Because I’m only female, I’ve decided to just admire Jenna endlessly. If you’re playing hide and seek between six and nine in the evening, and roll around lego blocks, and run a multi million company, and got 300 pairs of shoes, and drink a couple of cocktails by yourself in the evening whilst reading magazines and shopping online… You’re my girl. Period. Oh, and she’s got about fourteen pints of ice cream in her freezer. Oh, and II, she looks so cool. That’s why today, on this grey Thursday, I’ll share with you my heroine du moment Jenna Lyons’s seven tips of style. She’s creative director at J. Crew and guess what? Half her tips could’ve also been mine.

Wear white jeans all year long.
My white denims are in the pile with summer clothing, but why? White’s always appropriate and gives me a rather crispy feel.

Plunder your husband (or brother, or father, that’s allowed too).
Garance Doré looked so cool in her denim blouse from Scott on the last day of Fashion Week. She’d already worn all her clothes a bit too often and so she didn’t know what else to put on. She turned to her loved one. Anouk Bos at Creatorsofdesire.com and Jetteke van Lexmond also always look great in their boyfriend jeans. So loved ones, beware… I’m heading in your way.

Wear a nice watch or wear nothing.
I could’ve told you this. I’ve used my iPhone as a watch for years. It was either the Tank from Cartier or nothing at all. And now, hurrah, I’ve got the Tank on my wrist and I’m a happy person. Of course you can also wear less expensive jewellery, but a watch needs to be good.

Sneakers are okay but don’t walk around in your gym shoes.
I need to get used to this. I like heels, period. But I like Jet’s golden nikes so I hope she doesn’t wear them when she’s jogging in Vondelpark otherwise she’d get slapped on the wrist by Jenna.

Make sure you’ve got a signature piece everyone associates you with.
My colleague Agnès from Marie Claire always wore these beautiful golden rings from Yves Saint Laurent. It was her statement jewellery. Or my friend Micha with her Love bracelet. I couldn’t agree more.

Colour coordinate when you’re packing your suitcase.
I already got this tip from Leco van Zadelhoff. For example, I’ll choose a grey/black/white theme to make sure that my bag, shoes, and clothing match and I don’t have to bring along several pairs of shoes. I also like to look as collected as possible on the flight. Ton sur ton… it’s already such a visual explosion in the aeroplane with all those people, plastic tax free bags and other stuff. I’ll provide some visual peace and quiet. Well, I try to anyway.

Write handwritten notes. Style goes beyond only that which you wear.
I always try to handwrite personal cards. I’ve even got private cards with our address printed on them at home. A card doesn’t take much effort and it’s such a nice gesture. Now all I’ve got to do is to wait until my Montblanc is cured again.
