5 reasons why it is a good idea to buy a designer bag

Several Huge Happenings took place at our office during the last few weeks. A long wait and a lot of dreaming finally resulted in me getting a PS11 from Proenza Schouler and Josselin a Trio Bag from Céline. Josselin had not prepared her girlfriends for the big buy (“they won’t be that interested’) and when the sale was a fact and it appeared on Amayzine, they indeed questioned Joss “why is this bag actually worth so much money?” Joss said something about “it’s an investment!” and she got the reply: “an investment in what actually?” Good point, good point, but after hearing this I knew without a doubt that I wanted to write an article about it, because OF COURSE it’s worth the money. For these reasons:

1. To begin, it really is an investment.

The definition of an investment is “investing money or buying an asset or item to generate future income.” You’ll feel the generating of future income as doors open for you because of your Great Bag, as May explains here. Investing in a bag could be seen as investing in a new job and a new job is investing in more money: thus, the bag is a great investment. Next to that, a Great Bag is a relatively cheap way to upgrade your entire wardrobe, because a trouser from the H&M and a top from Zara look a whole lot better with a Céline/Proenza/Chloé bag.

2. You’ll have years of pleasure.

Another reason why it is a great investment, cause a Great Bag is still a Great Bag in 10 years time. The leather stays beautiful and will probably only get better with time, hardware doesn’t break off, zippers still work, stitching stays where it should and the colour will last. A Great Bag is expensive because of the brand, but also because of the outstanding quality. A super hip bag from Zara is fun, but you get sick of them quickly and they start looking uglier and deformed as time goes by. Not cool.

3. He can buy a watch can’t he?

Men are the worst when it comes to the price of a Great Bag and will tell you that it is totally insane. I once made the cardinal error of telling a male person how much I had paid for my Chloé Paraty. BIG mistake, so I kept him in the dark about the newly arrived Proenza. But I recently came up with an idea of how to explain to him how I justify spending that much on a bag. Mister has a Breitling on his wrist and those things don’t come cheap. In fact, that watch is more expensive than all my Great Bags together. A watch is to a man, what a Great Bag is to a woman: an investment piece, with a big price tag, that will last your whole life, and bring pleasure every day.

4. The buying moment is an event in itself.

A Great Bag is sold in a Great Store and you get it in a Great Shopping Bag. Preferably. The store usually looks super smart, the staff are friendly and treat you like the Queen of Monaco and if you’re really lucky, you’ll get a glass of bubbly. Afterwards you go celebrating with your (girl) friends, who celebrate hysterically with you. Or you can order it online, also possible. I ordered Proenza online and my hysteria was just as great when the The Big Box arrived with a smaller box inside, then the dust-bag and finally the PROENZA. Remember, record the moment, then you can rewind and watch it over and over again.

5. Simply because it makes you so very happy!

And actually the most important reason. When my dad asked unexpectedly how much the Proenza had cost me, I told him that I preferred not saying “because that is not what it’s all about. The bag makes me intensely happy and that is worth more than money.” Fortunately my dad understands these things and said “good my child, I agree” and that was that. You don’t have to justify what you’ve paid. If you don’t have to support a family of 18 kids and you’ve earned the money yourself, you can spend it yourself. How in heavens name could you possibly convince someone else that it isn’t crazy to buy something like this. It’s your money, and you should do with it as you wish, and no-one has the right to comment.

Buy the bag, keep the bag, LOVE the bag.
