christmas haters around you?

How to win them over.

“It’s only the 6th of December and you want a tree already?” It’s the same story every year. I like Sinterklaas but it’s also a big obstacle in the way of my Christmas galore. If I lived in New York or London, I could have already drowned myself in jingle bells, mistletoe and angel hair.

So because I, and most likely you too, know at least two people in your direct environment (one at work and one at home) who are not exactly Christmas types, it’s important to handle things correctly and to lead them up the garden path a little. Ingenuity and caution are required. Here we go.

Build it up slowly

Start by dressing the house ‘winter’ style. Putting Mariah Carey on too soon and shining the star will have alarm bells ringing. So stoke the fire, make sure the wood store is full (nice even if you don’t have a fire), throw a few thick plaids (coincidentally in green and red maybe) over the couch and burn loads of candles.

meet each other half way

The tree, you have a right to one. But overdressing it makes Christmas haters uneasy. Place only lights and bows. We are having a tree here at the office, where we also have a scowling Christmas hater, but will keep the decorations to Amayzine letters. Or hang it full with gifts for editors. Ha, that’s turned everyone’s heads.

Orange and clove

On their own, they have nothing to do with Christmas but you can create a fragrance that stirs everyone up. You’ll bewitch them. Take an orange and pierce it full of cloves. A bit of a job but it looks so cute and smells so good. Seriously tempting for everyone.

And the music

When I’m alone in the car, I stick my Sky-radio infuse on. Immediately. But this is not ideal when you have Christmas haters around. My love has banned Christmas music. I can only play it during Christmas itself. But I have a solution for this too. The Christmas album by Michael Bublé, old music but done in a new way. Guess what? He loves it and I tested it on Liesbeth today and it’s still on.

No holly, but instead…

Feel like decorating your table? Buy those super cute mini-Christmas trees from Rivièra Maison. Put about five of them together, a little fake snow and I bet that everyone will find it adorable.

Happy Holidays, they have NOW really begun.
