It’s nice to take a little gift with you when you go to someone for dinner. It feels good. Not necessarily to girlfriends that you see on a weekly basis, but for people you don’t see so often that have invited you over. I totally understand that you don’t want to spend a fortune though and you don’t have to. Here are few cute gift ideas for under twenty euro. Makes for a good entrance. Now let’s hope the dinner is tasty.
Suggest taking the dessert. Handy, because you get to choose what to have, for example a cake from the very best baker in town. I mean if you’re going to sin anyway.
Flowers are always good. Don’t go for the standard bush of roses. It would be good to know the host or hostesses style first. You can get around 8 of the same flowers for twenty euro. Sounds a little stingy but it isn’t, you can get some very special and large flowers for that.
Everyone loves a bottle of olive oil. Doesn’t need to be the most expensive in the supermarket, you can get really good oils at a deli or in an oil specialist store. For example at Meeuwig & Zn. in Amsterdam, they have the most delicious olive oils on tap and cool bottles with pop-lids.
Have a lovely photo printed and put it in a frame. Does not need to be very large, otherwise they might feel obliged to hang it on the wall, and that’s not the point. Small and subtle for on the mantle, in the hallway, or in the toilet room.
There is a good chance that the person that invited you likes cooking. That makes for an easy gift. A cookery book of course. Chicks Love Food have brought out a book called 5 or less. Simple dishes from max 5 ingredients. Beautiful pictures, simple recipes and delicious food.
I am mad about scented candles and love giving them as gifts. Diptyque is expensive, but they also come in a small size so a little cheaper.
Something for the kitchen is always thoughtful. Once you set foot in a kitchen shop you’ll end up buying something for yourself too. Well, that’s what happens to me anyway. A gorgeous tea towel, funny corkscrew, chic pepper mill, easy to find something under 20 euro.
