FASHION WEEK RECAP
Four Amayzine editors, eight eyes and a jam-packed fashion agenda. Together we are set to cover every show that matters, and then bring you up to speed of course. So you can talk about it as if you were actually there.
Saturday
Lacoste
We kicked Fashion Week off with Lacoste. Now if you mention the name Lacoste, you’re talking sport, and this particular show was heavily influenced by the game of golf. Models walked the runway to pumping loud music and a beat that you felt right down to your toes, in gorgeous pieces that we immediately wanted to take home. For example, oversized jumpers with graphic prints paired with feminine, flared skirts and cool lace-up ankle boots with pointed toes. Also ankle-length column dresses made from silk in virginal white, short mohair skirts and several jumpers with printed text. The models wore their hair long, straight and natural, which gave everything a sporty, chic and highly wearable look.
Tibi
Tibi is the brand that all the ultra-hip girls leave the stores with (and in). Olivia Palermo and Leandra Medine (from The Man Repeller) are huge fans, and were seated up front row as the new collection was presented on Saturday. Made up of exquisite, comfortable- and cuddly looking oversized pieces, all extraordinarily cut in warm-looking fabrics and fresh colours like baby blue, bright red, neutral grey and, of course, ever fashionable black. Cool, desirable, feminine and tough; the show was Tibi through and through.
Alexander Wang
The fashion journalists were in a frenzy for days, or weeks actually because fashion-darling Wang had decided to show his collection in Brooklyn. Brooklyn is to New Yorkers what Amsterdam North is to Amsterdammers – just not an option. But Wang is Wang is Wang and so all the Manhattan princesses risked their lives on a trip to Brooklyn. The collection flirted heavily with outdoor sports like mountain climbing and hunting, which resulted in a conceptual collection including many coarse-knit jumpers, robust coats and sturdy, tough boots. All with the typically cool and oh so fashionable Wang-edge of course. Instagram was teeming with #escapefrombrooklyn photos afterwards, as everyone ended up being stranded for about 2,5 hours because of a snowstorm, and it took ages before they could make their way back safely to the island. Oh the things you do for Wang.
Sunday
Victoria Beckham
Two things matter at a Victoria Beckham show. 1) The collection and 2) David and Harper in the frow. This season’s first prize had to go to Vicky with all the Beckham kiddies sitting front row, making it for sure the best frow of the season. Now the clothes. While last season’s collection may have been a a bit angular and hard, this time femininity played a major role. Still totally true to her signature look: oversized pieces made from luxurious and visually rich materials, though all of it slightly longer and with an increased focus on the waistline. In-between all the black and white, there were splashes of brightly coloured prints (colour!!), which added a twist to her very clean designs.
Derek Lam
If anyone knows how to translate the comfort of sportswear into stylish and fashionable alternatives, it’s Derek Lam. Soft, touchable fabrics with striking textures in boxy, oversized styles and a prominent colour theme – the opening look was a mustard skirt teamed with an old-rose coat, a good indication of what was yet to come. If Lam has anything to with it, the oversized coat trend will be sticking around, and we’re more than happy to oblige if he keeps delivering the goods.
Diane von Furstenberg
Diane’s shows are always a party, on the runway but also at the entrance to the building where the show is about to take place. Big groups of photographers, bloggers, fans and other fashion peeps gather in the hopes of catching a glimpse of people like Anna Wintour, the Hilton sisters, Olivia Palermo, Chiara Ferragni and Tommy Hilfiger. Inside the party continued as Karen Elson opened the show, followed by Karlie Kloss, Joan Smalls, Sasha Luss, Jourdan Dunn and Holland’s finest: Bette Franke. The wrap dress was prominent, the dress that brought everlasting fame and fortune to Diane, the dress that just celebrated it’s fortieth birthday. Colourful prints, elegant dresses, happy smiling girls and a finale with models draped in golden dresses that Diane had custom designed for them. The show resulted in ecstatic fashion journalists saying goodbye, despite the fact that they had to wait for ages for the lift or that a snowstorm awaited them outside.
Monday
Tommy Hilfiger
Totally understandable if Tommy Hilfiger still makes you think of preppy clothes with starched collars and American fraternities, but there’s absolutely no need. He showed an autumn collection with an incredibly high must-have quotient thanks to the cheerful, coarse-knit hats, oversized ponchos, parkas with lammy lining and many, many, many versions of the checkered print. Just as Doctor Peggy had predicted: Check-patterns are hot. We also saw baggy jeans with red bouclé coats, jumpers with Nordic motifs, warm-looking fabrics and several more oversized pieces.
