We’ve seen many different hairstyles pass by in the last hundred years. All these styles often return like a boomerang. At parties, on the catwalk: everyone is inspired. This video shows a summary of the styles, from the classic up-do in the thirties to the waffles of the nineties. And now? We’re going to show you that these styles are not done for, they can be worn all over again this winter.
In 1910, the hair was pinned back neatly with beautiful jewelled pins or hair bands. The loose curl and braid were especially notable ways of keeping hair out of the face. You still see it today, at shows like Creatures and Mark Fast, they had loose braids and a few stray pieces. Artworks in their own right.
The bob popped into existence in the 1920s. With a loose curl, that you still see at Alice Olivia and Incontri. The curl is predominately at the back. Use a lot of powder to keep it high and voluminous. Though they most probably only used a brush in those days.
The curl from the twenties stuck around, but then neater, called the finger wave. No longer combed out, the shape of the roller can stay in. A good does of shine spray and it’ll keep it’s sheen all day.
Antiono Marras and Zac Posen have been especially inspired by the 40s. All those rolls on the head, also known as victory rolls, are made tight so they stay in neatly. Don’t worry about a new look for the evening, cause this one is going no-where.
Forget the tight curls from the forties, they’re worn loose now. Chisato knows what to do with them, to make the look more now. Long hair is turned up and hidden with a loose curl.
The sixties belonged to the hippies. They loved freedom, lots of it, so also in the hair. Loose hair, but also up in the air. Gaultier and Nina Ricci showed that it can look very sophisticated chic.
Very like the look of now, but you’ll find out more soon, this one comes from the seventies. Loose hair, airy and extremely natural.
Think of punk, then you’re thinking of the eighties and Vivienne Westwood right? So yes, you still see it in her shows. Lots of hair and very wild. Remember the waffle iron? Go on and use it, if you want an even more extreme look.
The waffle iron was still in many bathrooms in the nineties, but the punky look had all but disappeared. The hair was worn sleek and shiny, with little volume. It was worn as flat as possible. These days it looks a bit more natural, but straight is still very in. The waffle iron? It’s been left off luckily.
Not that long ago, and that is why we’re sticking with straight hair. A bit rocky with the wet look. Especially Dior and Gaultier are masters in creating these sleek hairdos.
What do we see now? The beachy look of course. As if we’ve all be lying on the beach all day, diving in the sea and parading on the boulevard with slightly messy hair. It does not need to be neat or tidy. It should be very natural just like at Burberry, Isabel Marant and Blumarine.
