I died and went to Shoe Heaven

Ever since I wrote that piece on the newly opened Shoe Heaven at Harrods, I’ve been dying to pay a physical visit. Lucky me, I’m writing this from London and that long awaited visit fi-nal-ly happened. I mean, I absolutely have to go somewhere called Shoe Heaven, I know that and you know that.

So off we went to Harrods. I’ve been looking forward to this moment all day like a small child and let me tell you, I was not disappointed. The party started on the escalator, with a little sign that said “Shoe Heaven, fifth floor” on every landing. It’s like foreplay, because the more often you see it the more the excitement builds and the more you want to reach heaven, that highpoint, there, indeed.

Then you reach the fifth floor and all your wildest dreams come true. Instead of one big hall, it’s split into lots of little shop-in-shops. Chanel, Louboutin, Prada, Louis Vuitton, everything is for sale here. Sophia Webster, Charlotte Olympia, Givenchy, Giuseppe Zanotti and I could go on name-dropping for hours.

I came all prepared to buy something. Just because, for the experience. Now that I was actually standing in the midst of all these shoes, I started looking at price tags and my soul dropped a little lower with every pair. Because they’re expensive. Very expensive. 500 GBP expensive, so too much for me. I think I said that already. I spent a good three hours looking around and trying some on. It was like a museum to me, all those gorgeous shoes in real life and I could look at them, touch them and even try them on. Just like my dad, who can spend a week in the British Museum looking at old fragments, I could very happily spend a week here looking at shoes.

So, the conclusion is, if you are in London make sure not to miss a trip to Shoe Heaven. Only don’t get too excited about buying and prepare yourself for looking only. That old Dutch saying rings true: Look, look but don’t buy. Enjoy!
