Today is the second elimination round. I’m carrying a bag full of outfits that I borrowed from my dear friend Rob from Players in Haarlem. The danger of borrowing clothes from your favourite store is that you end up buying half of them, but hey no-one has yet died from looking too good.
Skinny jeans are on the menu for today. I’m spicing them up with a Chanel scarf as a belt. A beautiful jacket from the Donna Karen Collection on top, my Alexander McQueen boots on the bottom and I’m ready. The bottom half is not that important today, because we’ll be sitting behind a desk and I could actually have nothing on from the waist down, but then the sound guy would have a major problem attaching the microphone. Nope, my skinny jeans are the perfect partner for the day.
I delete the directions to the Sugar Factory in Halfweg from my gps. Today we’re heading to the model-house. That’s in Leiden. In the flour factory to be precise. I drive on to a huge terrain. The building reminds me of high school with hallways that look far more complicated than what they really are.
Selke, the make-up artist has transformed a flaky room into a beauty parlour. We drink our coffee out of plastic cups, admire the end result in a hand-mirror and have great fun. The producers and editors are all sitting together in a big room a little further along. Lunch is ready. Full of love but no glamour in sight.
I haven’t yet been inside the space where the girls are staying. Anouk and I sneak upstairs to take a look. The space is visually beautiful but with less comfort than the girls had in the Back to Basic themed show from a few years ago. No, there are no mice, they tell us excitedly. But there are bats. They squeal at night as they fly overhead. There are also two Dixie-toilets. With a sad little sign on the left hand one that says: poo-toilet.
Put a group of girls together and you know what happens; they create a mess. The loft in the flour factory is no exception. Unmade beds, overflowing cases, stacks of make-up. We’ll be flying to New York soon to test the ‘if you can make it there, you can make it anywhere’ theory. But something tells me that if you can survive the flour factory, you’re well on your way.
Bring on the elimination!
