In Amsterdam, salad bars seem to be sprouting up everywhere, but that doesn’t mean that they are all equally good. Being farm-fresh is important to me, preferably organic, no greasy dressings, no ready-to-eat croutons and it must be filling and nutritious, so not only salad leaves, tomato and cucumber.
See, I’m quite fussy sometimes. It’s been mentioned before that I am a bit of a salad fan, but here are six more places in Amsterdam where you can order delicious salads.
Voldaan
This is a tiny delicatessen with only a few seats and a bench on the Jan Pieter Heijerstraat, perfect for hours of people watching. They serve three variations of salad. Example: Quinoa, red pepper, marinated courgette, pear, dried cranberries, pecan nuts and fresh spinach.
Jan Pieter Heijestraat 121, Amsterdam
Mon. – Closed
Tues. – Sun. 12.00 – 20.30
Edel
Enjoy dining at the water’s edge. Several sandwiches and only one salad on the menu. The Chef’s salad. You never know what you’re going to get but it is always spot on. Super fresh seasonal vegetables.
Postjesweg 1, Amsterdam
Mon. – Thurs. 10.00 – 00.00
Fri. – Sat. 10.00 – 03.00
Sun. 10.00 – 00.00
Sane Food
Just recently opened in Amsterdam, but already hip for a while in New York, London, Paris and Sydney. Choose between regular salads like the Caesar, Waldorf or Niçoise, or make your own from an extensive choice. Everything is freshly prepared in front of you.
Haarlemmerdijk 136, Amsterdam
Mon. – Sat. 10.30 – 18.30
Venkel
This is my favourite place in the city. The salads are uber healthy, extremely filling and you don’t have to worry about any extra calories. There are great choice combos on the menu. The red lentil salad with peri peri spices, leek, cauliflower, raisins and cashews is to die for. They also serve delicious fresh juices or quinoa bread with homemade hummus.
Albert Cuypstraat 22, Amsterdam
Open daily from 11.00 – 21.00
Vinnies Deli
A tiny deli on the Haarlemmerstraat and Nieuwezijdskolk. They use many, many Ottolenghi recipes. Can’t beat them for hearty and healthy. Loads of vegetables and power foods. The homemade energy bars with chia and goji berries are yummy for on the run.
Haarlemmerstraat 46, Amsterdam
Nieuwezijds Kolk 33, Amsterdam
Open daily from 07.30 – 18.00
Uit de keuken
The name, which means ‘from the kitchen’ says it all. Everything on the menu is homemade. They strive for sustainability. Or, for being as sustainable as possible. The fish they serve is responsibly caught or farmed and always seasonal. The meat is at least free-range and the vegetables are always organic. My favourite is the spelt salad. Take aways are possible.
Bellamystraat 2, Amsterdam
Mon. – Tues. – Closed
Wed. – Sun. 11.00 – 21.00
