Last year at the Oscars, all eyes were drawn to Angelina Jolie’s leg, last Sunday at the BAFTAs, all eyes were drawn to her suit. We talked about it yesterday here on Amayzine, together with hubbie Brad she made her appearance in a super sexy tux with bow tie undone and 7/8 length trousers, and never before has she looked so sexy. A man in a suit is always such a turn on, but so is a woman in a suit. But there are a couple of things you need to think of when buying a suit like this, and today, in the Explorer, I’m going to talk you through them. Because nothing’s prettier than a nice suit, but, nothing’s uglier than an ugly suit.
We’ve got to thank Yves Saint Laurent for making women look sexy in suits. The fashion designer shocked friend and foe when he sent a model with Le Tux down the runway in Paris back in 1966. Though in those days, it was already shocking if a woman wore trousers, let alone an entire suit. Le Tux came right at the moment when feminism burst from its seams, and the look soon became the embodiment of the free-spirited, independent woman on both sides of the ocean. When in the years that followed photographer Helmut Newton regularly captured the strong feminine silhouette for Vogue Paris, the popularity of the tux was endless. But not without a fight. People screamed blue murder; women in tuxes were refused entry at operas and soirees, and there were even fines handed out to those who dared to garb themselves in male clothing. Over the last few years, this would drastically change. Practically every runway has a variation of the female suit, and also red carpets are littered with women dressed in suits. From canary yellow to sober grey with long legs or short ones, and with shirt underneath or au naturelle — it’s all possible.
Though those who desire a really good suit should do their homework. The first step to take is to research whether a suit is ‘glued or unglued’. An unglued jacket’s inside consists of different layers of fabric, which are connected with each other by means of horse hair. The result of which is that the suit falls naturally, and that it’ll form after your body. When a suit is glued, the inside is literally glued to each other. You won’t see much difference on a hanger, but if you put it on it’ll look unnatural because everyone has a different body. A glued suit doesn’t stretch and isn’t dynamic. If you wear a suit like this, you’ll always have some artificial thing hanging on your body. It’s easy to check whether you’re dealing with a glued suit. Unglued suits don’t have hard pieces in the seams of the shoulders, and it’s easy to let the fabric run through your fingers. A glued suit will feel much harder and sturdier. Don’t feel like spending hundreds of euros on a suit? Buy one at the cheaper stores in town like H&M or Zara, and let a good tailor make the necessary changes. Ring the best fashion store you know and ask where they send their suits to. If you adjust your cheaper suit to your measurements, you’ll know for certain that the fit will be great, which is the most important thing in the first place, anyway.
When it comes to styling you’ve got to keep in mind that it’s supposed to be feminine. High heels with pointed noses, and, if possible, some toe cleavage, a nice, low-cut blouse, and wear your hair down or in a high ponytail. Bright red lips vamp up everything. Be confident and feel strong, in short, own your suit and you’ll own the night.
