MAGIC ACCORDING TO NIKKIE

We were definitely curious when we received an email with the invitation to Nikkie Plessen’s show that said: ‘It’s All About Magic’. We were promised a ‘magical evening’ in royal theatre Carré, but everything else remained a mystery. We didn’t know whether to expect a fashion show or a Christmas circus

After we gorged on the shrimp croquettes and mini fries in the foyer, we sat front row in the theatre, and you know what? Nikkie treated us to an enormously entertaining show with our… Hans Klok in the spotlight. Female dancers disappeared and appeared. Flames, swords, loud bangs, and every now and again a little gag. All equally impressive, but the absolute highlight was Hans’s Houdini act in which he hung topsy-turvily in a straightjacket and had to get out in less than 90 seconds before being crushed by a pair of iron jaws.

We awaited in suspense when suddenly it was time for what we came for really, the FW14 NIKKIE collection.

Models on towering stilettos or Dr. Martens showed us a collection that appeals both to the femme fatale and the girly girl in us. Everything with a tough twist. We saw tight leather trousers and pencil skirts with zippers on the back or side seams. Comfy, but cool house suits. Jackets with her favourite cities on the back have been replaced with jackets with the names of her favourite shoe designers: Manolo, Charlotte, Giuseppe, etc. And of course catchy one-liners such as Friday rocks, Monday sucks. I found the sweaters with images of panthers too reminiscent of KENZO, which is a pity because Nikkie obviously has enough imagination to create her own icons.

After the fashion and magical spectacle, we talked with our fashion friends Hilmar Mulder and Fred van Leer at the steaming after party, and left Carré with a cheese niblet in our hands and feeling incredibly impressed.
