Who,what,where’s the MET Ball?

The Oscars are great, the Golden Globes quite entertaining, and the MTV EMA’s a party in its own. But the event during which fashion’s really central, where the most stylish people on the planet rack their fashion brains over, to which even the most famous celebrities have to wait and see whether they’re invited is the Met Ball. Anna Wintour’s the host of the evening, and every year she’s got someone alongside herself who’s co-chair. This year it’s going to be Sarah Jessica Parker. Haven’t got a clue what the MET Ball is? We’re explaining it to you.

What is it?

The ball’s a ball, duh, after which a dinner takes place at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Don’t think you’ll ever get invited to this event, and besides, if you are invited you need to empty your pockets. Last year’s ticket was about $15,000.- but this year, Anna decided that things had to be more exclusive and upped the fee to $25,000.-. Great to remember when you see all those handsome ladies and gentlemen walking the red carpet, they’ve all paid this amount of money. There’s also an exhibition that’s on display from 8 to 10 August at the MET. This year it’s all about Charles Taylor.

Who?

Charles Taylor was an American designer that created magnificent ball gowns in the 40s and 50s. He was also called ‘mr anti punk’ so think of corsets, endless trains, lots of silk, lots of tule, lots of couture. In short, drama. Which takes us to the theme and dress code: White Tie and Decorations.

“Great to remember when you see all those handsome ladies and gentlemen walking the red carpet, they’ve all paid this amount of money.”

Say what?

White Tie And Decorations. Yes, imagine having to work with this. Well expect a lot of vintage on women. Dior, Oscar de la Renta, Chanel, Valentino, and preferably pieces from the couture collection, of course. Lots of constricted waists, huge hoop skirts and dress – just a lot of gorgeous and impressive things. Men have to make do with extremely classic pieces. White Tie’s a dress code you don’t often see anymore, but think of tails, high hats, three-piece suits, perhaps a cane, or an old-fashioned watch because ‘decorations’ have to be celebrated too.

Exciting dates?

Definitely. It’s always something to look forward to, to see which star walks around in which designer. It’s been confirmed that Lupita Nyong’o will date Prada, Zoe Saldana with Prabal Gurung, Amanda Seyfried with Givenchy, Margot Robbie with Diane von Furstenberg, and Zooey Deschanel with Tommy Hilfiger. Though don’t think all these sets are BFFs, it’s Anna Wintour who decides who walks in who, and she determines ruthlessly. If Michael Kors attends then Anna decides who’ll accompany Michael and which dress from him she gets to wear. A source told The Hollywood Reporter: “The level of control is amazing. The invasion of Baghdad was nothing compared to this.”

So in the night from Sunday on Monday, it’s important to find as many live bloggers or twitterers because everything will happen then. Or Monday here at Amayzine because you bet we’re going to discuss the dresses.
