Small house, but longing for a million dollar attitude? It just so happens that I have several tips to make your house more luxurious. For a little, that is.

1. go for one large piece

All those little souvenirs and messy hippy trophies from Ibiza are cute, but not luxurious. Pack the junk away in a box. Go for one large piece of art as the focus point in your living room.

No, it doesn’t need to be expensive. You can download gorgeous artworks via www.rijksmuseum.nl/rijksstudio. Yes it is allowed. The American magazine Good Housekeeping also had a good idea. Download a large artwork, have it printed and then chop the piece in three and frame them in large Ikea frames. You’ll have created a triptych artwork. Very in during the last few years and I get it, because it gives a little twist to your art.

2. Crispy sheets

You could go wild with stiffening and ironing, but I prefer to drop my sheets off at the dry cleaner. I get them back crisp and fresh, and imagine I’m in a five star hotel each and every night. Costs 12 euro, you can’t beat that by doing it yourself can you?

3. The right accessories

Make sure you have recent magazines and beautiful scented candles. Baobab have the very best in my opinion. They burn them in the Hermès-stores so you know you’re doing something right.

4. tidy, tidy, tidy

The cheapest tip for a luxury feeling: clean up. Make sure you have the same plates, glasses and cutlery. Anything that isn’t used should be thrown away. Bring order to everything else. Clean and tidy cupboards, ironed sheets and no dishes in the kitchen sink.

You’ll soon see how much bigger and more luxurious everything feels once a broom has been through it.

5. Create an illusion

I read about an interior stylist on Harpersbazaar.com who made a room optically larger by using a big mat. You could even sew several small ones together. A rich, large mat spilling out under from the side and back of your couch will make the room large and more luxurious. A mirror behind the couch provides a more roomy effect.

6. Plaid

Drape a beautiful cashmere plaid over your couch. Wonderful to snuggle under on a chilly evening, but also an accessory to give your couch a lift. Even when you’re not under it.
