Fashion

If you were conscious during the sixties and seventies, like me, you’ll probably have noticed some trends returning a few times. Mostly paired with great memories. Some not. Platform heels for example, super hip only I’ll never forget the fool I made of myself trying to get on my bike. Mini? I got a chronic bladder infection from them and it’s a no go from a certain age. The Maxi is a different story, a dress length that is seen everywhere this summer, and one that I find comfortable and feminine for many reasons.

Every woman can wear the maxi dress, but there are several do’s and don’ts so pay attention.

1

If you are tall, the length can easily be worn down to your feet, but if you are not very tall, I advise to keep the length just above the ankle.

2

Always choose for a supple fabric. Flow is especially essential at this length.

3

If you are combining a skirt and top, take care that the contrast is logical: with a wide voluminous skirt, choose a tight fitting top. The opposite is true for tighter, straighter skirts, they look better with a loose top.

4

Length of the top. If you have a flat tummy area, a cropped top looks gorgeous. Choose for a top that is just on or under the waist. Tops that are longer make the look too pompous.

5

Colour. Two options here. You can go for a skirt and top in the same colour range-makes you look taller. If you choose for contrasting colours, you create a shortening effect. Although this season, there are also looks with mixed patterns worn together, I wouldn’t recommend them for this length skirt. A patterned skirt works better with a single colour on top and vice versa.

6

Shoes. If you are petite, choose a platform or wedge to elongate the silhouette. I prefer wearing a ballet pump, sandal or a slipper. Very high heels are not appropriate here unless you are going to a party. Watch out with heavy shoes with a lace or a moccasin. It makes the look very frumpy. Sneakers, yes, they are allowed.

7

If you are wearing a jacket, pick a short type for the correct balance. A little tailored if possible. Think motorbike jacket or denim jacket style.

8

Accessories can totally change the look. Always go for the more obvious and not too fine and dainty bags or jewellery. Long necklaces, large bags and striking earrings.
