Forget about Sint or Santa because Sale is coming to town. How to prepare yourself?

Do you recognise this? Around this time of the year, end November, I usually keep a fairly tight reign on things. I  keep myself under appropriate thrifty control but with a reason. Hey everyone, I’m talking fashion here, I keep the credit card packed away whereas I usually pull it out pretty quickly. The idea alone that I can buy the same item for a huge discount within a relatively short period keeps me controlled. Of course there is a small risk that the item will be sold out but experience has taught me that there will be plenty left over.

The points to pay attention to during a sale to ensure that wonderful feeling of shopping yet avoid mis-buys? Voilà, here are some traps to avoid and tips on how to:

*Make sure you’re on the mailing list of all your favourite shops. You’ll get a mail when the sale begins and who knows, you may also be invited to the pre-sale.

Who knows, you may also be invited to the pre-sale.

* If you’ve been a good client you could ask if you may already have the sale price, even if the sale has not yet officially started. It’s worth the try in any case.

* Take time to do investigation upfront. So take a look first and buy later. Go to all the shops you usually find too expensive and select a few things that have caught your eye.

Tip: If you try them on already, it’ll save you time at the sale.

* Do an inventory on what is already hanging in your closet. If you already have a stack of black tops then another one is not really needed. To avoid this, always ask the following questions: ‘Can I think of something in my wardrobe to combine this with?’ Really think about if you want the item desperately and if you would pay the full price for it.

It only pays to invest in quality and more so than ever at a sale. Think about buying an expensive winter jacket or a lovely cashmere and always get good basics.

* Stick to your style and don’t be tempted into buying something that you usually wouldn’t touch.

* Even if it costs almost nothing, always try it on!!! Remember that clothing bought in the sale can mostly not be returned!

* The longer you wait, the bigger the discount. With the unfortunate risk that it might no longer be there.

* Check out the new collection for next season. The take a look at the discounted item and see it it makes sense for next season and if you can still wear it then.

* And then finally I advise to wear easy clothing when going shopping: clothing that you can quickly and easily take on and off. Pay attention to your lingerie. You’ll feel a lot more confident in the mirror of the change room if you’re wearing great undies. Well fitting underwear (bra) ensures that clothing looks better on your body.

Have fun!
