SALE STRATEGY

Big news. The sale in Paris started today. I remember that on this day, my colleagues at Marie Claire International always left slightly frantically during lunch to take a taxi or tube from the Boulevard des Frères Voisins to go to the Bon Marché, and stock up on Stella, Isabel, Victoria, Donna, Paul, Joe or whoever.
No matter how tempting such a sale can be though, it’s important to stay levelheaded. Because otherwise you’ll still arrive home with bad buys. So here are my 6 golden rules.
1. Invest in a classic. Have you long dreamt of Alexander Wang’s Diego? Go for it; it’s now only a bargain (well, bargain, bargain) at netaporter.com. Or buy those Chanel shoes because they too go on sale. That’s a really great sale.
2. Think of the summer. The winter is almost over and done with. Really. True investments are those you can still wear in the summer.
3. Metal rocks, especially those distinct, funky pieces you should buy for a reduced price. Because let’s be honest, these aren’t meant to stay.
4. Grunge = good, think checkered blouses, biker boots or boyfriend shoes, everything that’s tough and has a bite is what to aim for.
5. Choose colour, summer 2014 is all about popping colours. So forget subtleness and buy these loud items on sale like Louboutin and Dior’s fluo pumps. I think the sale is perfect to buy striking shoes.
6. My last tip: would you also have bought this if you had to pay the entire amount? Be honest?
