#SELFIE

Images: Instagram

Kim Kardashian, Doutzen, Nikkie Plessen, Yolanthe Cabau, Chiara Ferragni, they’re all good at it. Taking selfies and posting them. I wouldn’t dare. Every now and again, sure, but I find posting too many selfies to be a bit too much self-glorifying. Yeahhh Doutzen and Kim we know you look incredibly beautiful without makeup.

I’ve caught myself doing it too. Shooting the same pic twenty times in a row, since it’s quite hard to shoot a good one. I always have a scare when I want to take a photo of something and the camera’s still on selfie mode. Or when you’re unexpectedly facetimed. Somehow, I always look unflattering. Looking downwards. Hello chin! Thank heavens for Instagram filters, they can cover up and prettify a lot, but how to look and which distance to keep between your camera and your face? Duckface is a popular pose, but that I refuse. Well, right, perhaps not when I’ve drunk a glass too many. I might pout my lips a tad.

I took it upon myself to do a bit of research because it takes me at least half an hour before I’ve shot a slightly acceptable selfie.

A couple of tips because honestly… we all do it right?

  • Use the X-pro II filter on Instagram. This trick gives a great candlelight effect. All your skin impurities are blurred, and your eyes, jawline and lips are accentuated.
  • No arms! Try to avoid showing your arms on the photo. It’s really unflattering and also very obvious that you’re taking a selfie. Download the self-timer app and put your telephone somewhere high and shoot.
  • Do you really want to put a #nofilter underneath your photo because you want to show how pretty you are without a filter then apply a bit of matte bronze powder on top of your foundation and put twenty-five layers of mascara on your eyelashes, of course.
  • You take the best photos with natural lighting. But not with direct sunlight because this overexposes your photo and makes you squint. According to Scott Schuman, the reflection of New York skyscrapers are perfect to take selfies with.
  • Selfie queen Kim K. explained to us in a clip that you should always photograph yourself from a steep angle. Stretch out your neck, stick out your chin, hold your head a bit cocked, and do a duckface. You know, pout your lips.
  • Last but not least. Check the background. Nothing’s worse than a background covered with dirty knickers.

We thought of something if you think it’s a bit creepy to show yourself like this. An ‘ussie’. Very simple. A selfie with the two of you. That’s a lot easier and actually much more fun. Though there are still some rules to keep in mind. Use your good angle, don’t overexpose, don’t show your arms, and don’t let it be too posey. Sigh… why is this so incredibly important? #Duhhh
