NEW STYLE WINTER COAT
I really don’t like winter coats. Well maybe the camel coat from MaxMara or the oversized Céline, but as for the rest of the winter jacket phenomenon, all very boring. You need a parka against cold and rain but it’s near impossible to create a good look or a fashion moment. And it’s absolutely wrong over a gorgeous dress.
I once had a Patrizia Pepe jacket with a ‘built-in’ petticoat. The top half was modest grey, the bottom part was full of colour, so it looked like you were wearing an intricate outfit. I’ve had enough of the jacket now so I’ve started developing my own creations. Do you want to know how?
- Take a blanket. Cut it in half so you are left with a piece of cloth that you can wrap around yourself. Or buy one the right shape, that’s another possibility.
- Find a lovely belt. Make sure the belt only ties around the front of the fabric. This will accentuate your silhouette on the front and leave the back to hang loosely over. It’s warmer if the fabric is pressed against your body.
- Vest de luxe. I’m hooked on oversized jerseys but they’re not warm enough to replace a jacket. I usually wrap the jersey against my body and keep it in place with a belt. And then I wear a fun fur stole over it to keep the wind off me.
- The poncho also makes a wonderful jacket. The only downside is that there is no charming way to take it off. Fine, here comes another wonderful anecdote. During New York Fashion Week, Jet, Liesbeth, Peggy and I had enjoyed three glasses of wine in The Standard Hotel. Then we went to a show that turned out to be worthless. When Jet turned her head to the right and looked at me sitting in my Isabel Marant poncho, she nearly peed her pants from laughing. The poncho was back to front and inside out, and the label was poking me in the chin. Perhaps a boring winter jacket would have been a better idea in this case.
