Even though we have breakfast with prosecco and head into town with bottles of premixed drinks, there are also people amongst us who’ve got to work on Sundays and holidays like King’s day. VanVelzen’s one of those people, he’s the final act at 538 in Breda. I talked to him right before he climbed the stage.
“It began with mounting the flag together with my son and progressed into visiting the Oranjeplein in Haarlem where all kinds of King’s day activities were planned for children. And in a bit I’m performing for 40,000 people in Breda. I’m used to working on days on which everyone’s off, and I don’t really like to drink that much so it’s not difficult to work on these types of days. But I’m definitely going home after the concert, I don’t feel like partying in Breda.”
“Probably mounting the flag with my son. It’s the first time they’re really understanding what King’s day’s all about, and I thought it was such a special moment.”
“At a certain point, I’ll take to the stage with a Dutch flag. Perhaps a bit much, but I thought: what would Freddie Mercury have done? And that was the flag. Last year, we summarised Beatrix’s reign with Queen songs. That was very extraordinary.”
“Definitely, I think it’s such a beautiful thing, and I also think that king Willem-Alexander and queen Maxima give it such a contemporary schwung. They’re the perfect ambassadors of our country. Besides, I like a day on which we show how proud we are of our country and to express that all together.”
“I know it’s Sunday when I hear Sinatra’s I’ve got you under my skin. Sunday’s all about the family. And perhaps I’ll work in my studio at home on a couple of songs for a few hours.”
