This is the moment
THAT JOB IS YOURS
It’s Monday and it’s grey. You don’t have any excuses. It’s the perfect day to apply for that dream job. I’m going to help you. If someone has gone to job interview school, it’s definitely me. Think of a confused executive producer who asked me to come back three times because I was really young for the job or an extremely strict Marie Claire director, who ignored every joke or attempt at interpersonal contact even before I realised I was wearing my dress inside-out. I have been around the block and got the jobs, and I’m sharing my job interview tips because you deserve that great job, and because it’ll change your life. Really.
1. BE PREPARED
My loved one and I (we once worked at RTL Boulevard together as editors) have sometimes sent away someone during a job interview because they hadn’t seen last night’s show. This just goes to show that you don’t care for what happens in the world. Going into further detail would only have been a waste of our times. Ruthless, but hey, did anyone say we were having a cosy chat over tea?
2. AIM HIGH
Say out loud what you want to become, and add a little bit extra because you’re always able to do more than you think. It shows that you’re ambitious and believe in yourself.
3. LOOK THE PART
Wear a look that matches the job. I’d always recommend a jacket because it breathes authority. Is the job more officy then wear a blouse underneath. More into the creative industry then match it with a t-shirt and a great skinny. And make sure you’ve got a Good Bag. Even if you have to yank it out of your most fashionable girlfriend or have to borrow it from your mum, a bag does the trick. I’d also seriously recommend heels. Don’t think of sexy leopard printed ones, but chic ones from Gucci or Jimmy Choo will do. Women will heels earn more, a research by Glamour once stated, so you know what to do. I think sneakers or ballerinas are great, but at a job interview heels are really required. It radiates class and power.
4. ASK QUESTIONS
You come across less dependent and show interest in the company when you’re asking about the specifics of the job, wether it could lead to other job opportunities within the company, their take on the digital world or whatever.
5. BE ON TIME
So really a bit too early. You can have a wee, brush your hair, and prepare calmly for what’s about to follow next. You’re of course armed with your printed cv (with photo otherwise it looks like you’ve got something to hide), it might just happen that the person you’re meeting with was too busy to print it out themselves, and you’re already showing to alleviate her of responsibilities. And yes, don’t talk about money during the first meeting. You’re doing so great that you’re assuming you’ll get to a good deal.
