You must know them, those snapshots from international hot & happening celebs. Fresh and fruity do they smile at the lenses of the paparazzi when they’ve landed after a long flight to Barbados, St. Barth, or other exciting holiday hotspots. Victoria, Kim, or Chiara, we can’t ever catch them looking crinkled after flying for hours. No way! And trust me, when that coiffure looks like a just-out-of-bed look, a ceremony of styling products took place to get that look.
Lead by example so here are my tips. Make yourself as comfortable as possible to make sure you look great and paparazzi proof after a tiring and long journey.
Checking in: A bit of a celeb travels Business Class. Even when they’ve not paid for it they’ll probably get an upgrade because of their status. Imagine being bothered by someone wanting to take a selfie with you in Economy. If you also want to granted an upgrade, realise flip flops and sweatpants won’t cut it. Make sure you look a bit representative or Business Class worthy. Be kind and polite, and a bit creative when checking in. Try to fake a handicap. A sore knee, for example, — ouch — you’re recovering from a meniscus operation.
Another good one: is there an endless queue at the Economy check-in counter? Behave determined, but ignorant, and stand in the always quicker queue of the Business Class counter. A bit ballsy, but I assure, nine out of ten times they won’t make you wait again in the enormous queue. Perhaps use your sore knee again.
Lugage: Choose for matching suitcases. Nothing looks as cheap and fashion unworthy as a last-minute trolley. If you’re thinking about investing in a Louis Vuitton set, realise you’re not the only one. Especially due to the popular fake ones, LV’s become common and the luggage claim’s filled with them. Choose something more original. You’ll also look the part with a set of Prada or Hermès suitcases. I adore the ones from Mulberry, which I own in all the different sizes.
My advice for a hand bag would be to take one with a bit of volume. All the recently purchased tax free items should fit. That bright yellow tax free bag are easy to lose at the airport. Besides, the bag should be big enough for iPads, iPhones, some magazines, the needed beauty products — leave-in hair conditioner, lip balm, moisturising face cream, etc. — whilst flying. It’s a bit of an investment, but that Birkin from the Hermès is ideal, stylish, and besides, a match for life.
Travel attire: Because I don’t want to look like a lost yogi on my way to and from the airport — fashion is my profession — I like to put comfortable clothing in my hand bag. Once in the air, I rush to the lavatories to change into thin sweatpants and a cashmere top. Things with some wiggle room, so the shoes are replaced with socks. And I can’t do without my enormous Hermès pashmina that serves as a blanket.
Privacy: Essential are ear plugs if you travel by yourself and want to isolate yourself a tad. Unless you’re prepared to hear a total stranger’s life story. And of course … paparazzi proof sunglasses. Together with a magazine or book the ideal weapon again unwanted conversations and meddlesomeness.
