ACNE STUDIOS, WHAT THE…?!

There is a very fine line between fashion and lunacy, between beauty and art, between artistic and wearable. Fashion is art and clothes are not always fashion, not all clothing is beautiful and taste is a strange thing. So here we go.

Last week while innocently and unsuspectingly scrolling through the webshop of Acne Studios, I came across a rather startling hat and pair of gloves. Fine, Acne is known for being on the edge of beautiful and idiot, but this time I couldn’t stop laughing. I mean, look at the styling, come on, this is extremely laughable? The beanie cost a ridiculous €600,- people. Six hundred euro for a blue knitted Calimero-egg cup. Maybe it’s my puritan brain that can’t see the art in this madness, but you know I’m standing by my opinion.

I scrolled a little further along in the webshop and I came across designer Ava Lazercut Brown, and her fur until the elbow mittens. Oven-mitts. That’s what they are. Oven-mitts that cost 700 euro, but oven-mitts nonetheless. Do you any of you remember the film Iep, the bird girl? That’s what they look like. A bird girl with oven gloves. Blogger Bryan Boy doesn’t give a damn, he likes things resembling oven-gloves. I mean, come on now!

Oven-mitts. That’s what they are. Oven-mitts that cost 700 euro, but oven-mitts nonetheless.

It is not the first time that I don’t get why something is supposed to be pretty. Or why some people like certain things. I sometimes feel like people, like Bryan Boy, do it purely for provocation. Which is also kinda cool, because it would be very boring if we all coloured in the lines all the time, but I feel like this type of thing belongs on a catwalk or in a fashion shoot somewhere. Where it is actually about fashion and art and not in real life, no-one wants to walk around like a piece of art do they?

I haven’t even mentioned the practicalities yet, how does one move around with gloves like those. How do you pick up your keys? How do you open a door? You can’t. And what about that jacket? What do you wear under it? Does it fit? HOW?! So many questions, so few answers. If someone would like to explain to me why this beanie and these gloves are such a good idea, I would sincerely welcome it.
