I used to put on ‘Mama’ from the Spice Girls. I’d been a difficult teenager again. Or the song ‘Mommy’ from Sela Sue, also such a great song with which to let your mum know you’re thankful for having her as a mum. Do you sometimes also praise your mother amongst girlfriends? And feeling embarrassed about being a handful? Well, I do. Right, we’re talking about a few years ago though.
I really have the best, best, BEST mum in the world. She’s endlessly supportive, sometimes surprises me with fresh flowers in my house, laughs really loudly after hearing my jokes, sometimes puts a sweet card in my mailbox, and she’s the best cook on the planet. A very good reason to spend the entire day with my mum. Instead of the other way around. Just because she’s the greatest.
I’M GIVING YOU A COUPLE OF IDEAS TO DO WITH YOUR MUM. GREAT FOR HER AND FOR YOU. HERE THEY COME:
- Go to a spa for the day. Book a massage, bubble in their jacuzzi, go to a sauna and end the day with fresh mint tea and a magazine. Spa Zuiver, de Zwaluwhoeve and Thermen Bussloo are lovely Wellness resorts.
- I’m really embarrassed, but I haven’t yet been to the Stedelijk or Rijksmuseum. A very good reason to take your mum.
- Get a pedicure at the Soap treatment store. Summer’s around the corner. If you’re lucky you even get to sit next to each other (and talk) during the treatment.
- It’s a bit grey weather so why not go see a movie together? The film Soof looks like a perfect mother / daughter movie. Or Weekend in Paris.
- Take her to Skins Cosmetics and let her choose something. You can also ask them to do your makeup or do the (free) ‘Nose’ test. You can find out what her favourite fragrance is.
- Have a high tea. There are so many hotels that organise it on Sunday.
- When you live in Amsterdam, there’s a great restaurant called Moeders (what else). You get to take a photo with your mum after dinner and put it on the polaroid wall. Great or what?
- Offer her to help her clear out her closet. Perhaps you’ll bump into some great things you’d like to have and everything that’s left over should go to a thrift store.
- Does your mother have green fingers? Then go pick out some plants for her balcony or garden at a garden centre .
Well, this must surely be enough, right? Oh, and some flowers and a sweet card’s also always right. But that’s obvious.
