10 secrets
about Kim Kardashian’s beauty look
Last week we unveiled Kim’s hair secrets and this time the honor goes to make up artist Mario Dedivanovic to disclose the secrets behind her make up routine. He is the brains behind the hashtag change from #IWokeUpLikeThis to #ThisTakesFourHours (seriously!) and is sharing his best tips, tricks and products. Take a day off tomorrow, because it’ll take a while before you’ve got this down. But hey, we didn’t expect anything less from a Kim Kardashian look did we?
Make up first, then hair
“When clients get there hair done first than the odds are that they’ve obtained a little bit of hairspray on their faces, and that’s not very useful. Not to mention, it’s not easy if you want a big bouncy blow-out because then you have to pin back your hair when you’re getting your make up done.”
Use moisturizers instead of primer
Dedivanovic advises to drop the primers. “Use a soft cream on your face, neck and chest. It helps the foundation blend well. I’m not a big fan of primer and that’s why I don’t use it because I don’t like barricading my skin and make up from one another.”
Use foundation everywhere
“You probably already blended your foundation on your forehead, nose, chin and cheeks, but don’t forget your eye lids, ears, chest, arms, legs and feet. Seriously, for a red carpet event I work from top to bottom and make sure that the skin tone of the Kardashian is the same everywhere. It’s fine to skip them occasionally, but just don’t forget your ears. It would be such a waste to be photographed with bright red ears.”
Use a steady hand
“Always use the same hand you use when you apply your make up. You start off with your eyebrows, then eyeliner and end it with a bit of powder. All using the same hand. It keeps everything balanced and it makes sure you don’t smear your foundation by accidentally making the wrong move.”
Ombre effect for your eyebrows
Dedivanovic uses all the time in the world to create the perfect eyebrows. His secret is to create a type of ombre effect. “If you make the exterior a little darker and the interior a little lighter, than your eyebrows look softer. More gentle, less tough.”
Creams first, then powders
Just like with the rest of the face Dedivanovic doesn’t apply any primer to the eyes and let’s all the eye shadows do all the work. “Use an eye shadow cream first and then powder because creams make it more intense, thicker and richer whereas the powder works as a pigment and stays in the right place the entire day.”
Use a triple liner
“If you’re only carrying around one eyeliner in your bag, then clearly you’re doing something wrong. I usually use three to four different layers of eyeliner to obtain the deepest effect. One might lift the eyelid, while the other takes care of the perfect finish and the third might have the perfect tip for the corners of your eyes. It gives your eye’s way more definition and makes them look much richer.”
Bak donkere kringen weg
Alright alright, here it is. The baking technique. I explained this term a while ago because it’s the easiest way to get rid of bags under your eyes and makes your skin look smoother.
Build up the lashes
“Lashes are incredibly important. They don’t have to be fake, as long as you know how to build them up. Start at the roots and zigzag your way to the top. This way the hairs will all be perfectly separated and it will give them more volume. If you want to make it a tad more dramatic then add some extra long lashes to the corners. Once the added extra lashes have dried up, brush on an extra bit of mascara and your lashes are ready to go.”
Contour and highlight
“This is where I go all out. With a good powder brush and bronzer I apply dark lines and with the use of a highlighter I make certain areas a little lighter. The way I do it is rather extreme because that’s how you obtain great shadow and depth in a face. I use different kinds of highlighters to add sometimes add some warm tones or to add shine.”
