3 Things that happened
in Cannes so far
The prettiest week of the year is here. It’s that sunny week in May when we follow around couture-clad stars promoting cool new films against the backdrop of the gorgeous Côte d’Azur. It’s a perfect mix of glamour, fashion and culture. And we can’t get enough of it. Now that the 68th Cannes Film Festival is well on its way we’ll share 3 notable things that happened so far.
Opening night
After a lovely parade of A-list arrivals at Nice Airport, the 68th edition of the Cannes film Festival kicked off Wednesday night with the opening film La Tête Haute. Naomi Watts (in Elie Saab), Julianne Moore (in Armani Prive), Lupita Nyong’o, and first time director Natalie Portman (in Dior) all turned up on the Palais des Festivals red carpet to pay tribute to Catherine Deneuve.
The grand dame of French cinema was dressed in Jean Paul Gaultier. We saw Lupito keeping up her best dressed average in a plunging green Gucci dress and jury member Sienna Miller in a midnight blue Lanvin gown.
You would think when looking that fabulous it’s almost impossible not to take a selfie. Nevertheless these ladies kept their phones in their clutches as there is a strict no-selfie policy on the red carpet in Cannes.
Doutzen’s leg
You can always count on the Cannes Film Festival to be exciting and controversial. The first story already making headlines before the festival even started. Doutzen Kroes was accused of a Photoshop fail after a picture she posted on Instagram with her L’Oréal Paris friends Karlie Kloss, Liya Kebede and John Legend. Her leg and foot were supposedly in a human impossible position. Or at least that’s what the Internet thought. Doutzen soon assured us that Photoshop was no chance involved proving her statement with another Instagram post.
Charlize & Sean
Charlize Theron stole the show at the Cannes premiere of Mad Max: Fury road. She stepped on the red carpet in a Dior gown joined by boyfriend Sean Penn. The crowd went nuts for the Hollywood glamour couple but Sean Penn tried to keep a low profile nonetheless. When approached by French television on the closed carpet, he didn’t say a word, just pointing to Theron. It was her night.
USA Today informed us that ‘he stayed out of the spotlight completely. Or as much as Sean Penn can stay out of the spotlight on a red carpet in Cannes. It should be pointed out that he never helped Theron with her flowing and troublesome yellow gown, which kept getting snagged. That would have been too much. Penn sort of slinked away at one point. But the photographers clamored for more. Theron ran back and grabbed her boyfriend for some killer shots’
