5 comforting quotes

If I ever get nervous? Well, not as often as I used to. It’s one of the benefits of getting older. Most situations in life fall in the ‘been there, done that’ category. Also I’ve gathered lots of special people around me that provide me with all kinds of wisdom that will make me straighten my back and push out my chin. I’ll share some of it with you. Maybe it comes in handy today.

man suffers most from the suffering he fears

My grandfather used to say this. I made it my own by turning it into:  ‘We’ll cross that bridge when we get there’. When misery or trouble comes calling, that’s the moment to deal with it. If you worry about these things beforehand you’re just missing out on a good time. And you know what? You can deal with it. No matter how hard you fall, you’ll always get back up on your feet.

blow it away

Wise words from my good friend Harriet Calo. With the emphasis on blowing not sighing or puffing as that would mean going through too much trouble for your opponent. So if someone says something rude, softly blow those words away. You might even blow off that nasty person with it.

THOSE WHO MATTER DON’T MIND AND THOSE WHO MIND DON’T MATTER

A few years ago something happened to one of my loved ones and I felt the need to protect that person from the outside world. My priority was preventing others from saying something that would do her injustice. When I saw this quote on a sign during my vacation in Ibiza I thought: ‘ain’t that the truth’. My mother always said: ‘Groβe Geisten sehen es nicht und kleine geht’s nicht an’. Those are true words.

make it small and throw it away

Brenda, the art director at Marie Claire, was a very organized type of person. If a cover we all liked very much was rejected she would sigh, crunch all our objections into an imaginary paper ball and throw it over her shoulder. Try it. It works.

a poem

I come from a family of sailors; my dad is a captain and my brother followed in his footsteps. Maybe that’s why these lines are so comforting to me.

I must go down to the seas again

To the lonely sea and sky

And all I ask for is a tall ship

And a star to steer her by

What it all comes down to is that we really don’t need a lot to get by. One sentence can be enough.
