To buy or not to buy?

Just when Lisbeth and I were deliberating that it’s been ages since we had a sleepless night over a want-to-have item ( you could call this the tipping point of snobbism) we popped into the Dolce & Gabbana store on the Corso Venezia.

The most enjoyable thing about the Prada and Dolce boutique on this street is that they have many exclusive items that are only sold here. You immediately have your hands on a collector’s item; a wonderful thought: being unique.

We were drawn in by handmade mannequins dressed in the style of Southern Italy (puts you back €1400, but hey!, you got yourself a doll) and the colorful fruit clutches that were preaching summer from the shop window.

Could we just hold them? Of course we could. And if we were allowed to take a peek at the price, excuse me, “the value”? It’s not polite to talk money but one mannequin buys you two clutches. We noseyed on and spotted some very becoming key-chains. Two baby espadrilles bound together with some raffia, price: €250 a piece.

“ So the clutch is equal to three of these trinkets”, said Liesbeth. Spoken in truth.

We decided to take a little stroll to ponder about the purchase. It’s not a classic- we took this down on the don’t-list. But it will make you happy all summer – we put on the do-do-do-do list. But there’s a luring danger of: there-she-is-again-with-that bag which was opposed by: a boring bag is never seen by anyone and never has a chance at becoming boring.

We knew where this was going from the start. “ Potresti portarci al Corso Venezia, per favor?”, were the exact words we told the taxi driver and before we knew it, we were walking down the street with a huge Dolce-box.

One day has passed. Clutch was allowed to sleep beside my pillow last night. And while I’m writing this in the breakfast room, she sits quietly beside me.

The waitress with a missing tooth has preformed a few ritual dances around her and a colleague hotel guest is giving us glances that are a mixed range of admiration, deep jealousy and intense craving.

I know this for sure: clutch and I are going to be very happy together.
