6 fashion pieces
worth investing in
I recently started an un-hoarding project. What that means it that I’m getting rid of every bit of junk and only plan to keep beautiful stuff. May owns my dream wardrobe; she only has really good clothes and doesn’t own stacks of tops that are all ‘just not right’ but do take up space. So buying good clothes is part of un-hoarding. See, it’s okay for a crazy-looking jacket that you’ll only wear twice to cost twenty or thirty euros, but there are some things that have to be just right. And yes, that means splurged on. These will be your investment pieces that will always be right and can be supplemented with more trendy and cheaper items. So, those investment pieces. Here we go.
1. Leather boots
You simply have to have a pair of good boots in your wardrobe. Quoth the woman who just spent a small fortune on new Valentino boots. No matter how much your credit card hurts, these things are for life. Or at the very least a couple of years. And of course you can survive the world on a pair of Zara boots just fine, but those don’t last much more than a single season. Plus “real boots” have a similar impact as “a real bag” – you always look good in them. Pick a dark grey or black pair, or at least something that pairs well with the rest of your wardrobe. It doesn’t make sense spending a thousand euros on a pair of boots you can hardly wear with anything at all.
2. A cocktail dress
It goes without saying you need a Little Black Dress and yet you shouldn’t forget to buy a good cocktail dress. Sometimes an LBD is just a little too dull and you need something… well… more upbrat. Don’t worry too much about wearing such a dress just once. I have an acid green Joseph dress that, combined with different shoes and jewelry, has proven itself the perfect party piece several times over.
3. Black pumps
You are allowed to spend a ton of money of these because you’ll wear them often. Make sure they are comfortable. That means forgetting about those Louboutins and picking a pair by Jimmy Choo or Prada, who make very wearable heels. With a pair of jeans during the day or your LBD or cocktail dress at night, a pair of good black pumps will get you everywhere.
4. A great coat
We live in a country that is ruled by King Winter for many months. When you think about it, it is weird that we usually only own one single coat. All your beautiful clothes are mostly covered by that stupid coat and are therefore rarely seen. So a great coat means you also look great on the outside. We’ll be in New York for New York Fashion Week and since it is well and truly coat weather there, a great coat will be a must-have. I will bring my leather jacket (another investment piece, by the way), one by Patrizia Pepe I bought three years ago and am still in love with, and a new coat by Peter Pilotto. Bought at De Bijenkorf department store at a 90% discount. The perfect investment, to be sure!
5. A small bag
We have talked about this many times before: a good bag opens doors. Invest in a designer bag. It will be worth your money, I promise. I own bags by Proenza Schouler, Chloé and Marc by Marc Jacobs and will never wear anything else again. They are so beautiful they can leave the house at night as well. The leather only gets better over time. And they make you happy every day.
6. A large bag
The Amayzine editors work on MacBooks and I used to transport mine in linen bags. When I bought my Proenza, however, I thought it looked really stupid. Enter a Great Bag into which I can also fit my laptop. Enter: my red Stella McCartney. Which I also bought in the sale, I should mention. But listen, when you have a job for which you have to lug around a laptop or folders or whateveryouneed, invest in a great bag into which you can fit it all.
