7 x fun facts over de oscars

Over precies een week is het weer tijd voor het grootste rodeloperspektakel van het jaar; de uitreiking van de Academy Awards. Op dit moment kunnen we alleen nog maar speculeren over wie uiteindelijk met de geliefde gouden mannetjes onder hun arm naar huis gaan en wat de sterren uit de kast zullen trekken, maar er zijn een aantal zaken die we wel zeker weten. Hier zijn de meest curieuze Oscarfeitjes op een rij.

1. Geen van de winnaars uit 2014 zijn genomineerd
Geen van de grote helden van vorig jaar, Lupita Nyong’o, Cate Blanchett, Matthew McConaughey of Jared Leto zijn dit jaar genomineerd voor een Oscar. Er blaast duidelijk een frisse wind door Hollywood, want voor meer dan de helft van de genomineerden, onder wie Eddie Redmayne, Felicity Jones, Emma Stone, Rosamund Pike , Benedict Cumberbatch, Steve Carell, J.K. Simmons en Patricia Arquette, is dit hun eerste Oscarnominatie ooit.

2. De goodie bag is €50.000 waard
De Oscargenomineerden die de grote prijs niet krijgen toegekend, worden getroost met een swag bag waar voor zo’n €50.000 aan goodies inzit. De inhoud was in voorgaande jaren soms zelfs het dubbele waard, maar sinds een aantal jaar houdt de Amerikaanse belastingdienst de tasjes ook in de gaten en wordt het gezien als belastbaar inkomen.

3. Meryl Streep haalt mogelijk een record
Acteerlegende Meryl Streep is dit jaar voor de 19e keer in haar carrière genomineerd dankzij haar rol in Into the Woods. Als ze wint staat ze gelijk met Katherine Hepburn, de enige actrice ooit die vier Oscars in ontvangst mocht nemen.

4. Oscarwinnaars zijn nooit echt eigenaar van het beeldje
Iedere Oscarwinnaar moet een overeenkomst tekenen waarin staat dat als je ooit jouw award wilt verkopen, je ‘m eerst aan the Academy moet aanbieden voor $1. Voordat deze regel bestond heeft Steven Spielberg de Oscar van Bette David gekocht voor ruim €500.000.

5. De leukste bijbaan ooit
Het Kodak Theater, waar de Oscaruitreiking plaatsvindt, heeft 3.332 zitplaatsen. Natuurlijk zijn er altijd mensen die niet komen opdagen. Hier worden de inmiddels beroemde stoelvullers voor ingehuurd die voor €100 per uur de zaal vol moeten laten lijken.

6. “En de Oscar gaat naar…”
“En de winnaar is…” is de zin die tot 1989 werd gebruikt om de Oscarwinnaars aan te kondigen. Dit is sindsdien veranderd naar “En de Oscar gaat naar…”, vermoedelijk omdat dit de verliezers een minder slecht gevoel zou geven.

7. De 45 seconden-regel
Nadat de ceremonie in 2002 langer dan vier uur had geduurd, nam de organisatie maatregelen en voerde de 45 seconden-regel voor dankspeeches in. De sterren die na 45 seconden nog steeds niet klaar zijn met het bedanken van hun collega’s, moeder en god, worden bruut afgekapt door het orkest.

In exactly one week, it will be time for the biggest red carpet spectacle of the year: the Academy Awards ceremony. Right now we can only speculate about who will walk away with the coveted gold statues and what the stars will wear, but there are some things we do know for sure. These are the most curious Oscar facts.

1. None of the 2014 winners are nominated
None of last year’s big heroes, Lupita Nyong’o, Cate Blanchett, Matthew McConaughey or Jared Leto, are nominated for an Oscar this year. Clearly a fresh wind is blowing through Hollywood because more than half of the nominees, including Eddie Redmayne, Felicity Jones, Emma Stone, Rosamund Pike , Benedict Cumberbatch, Steve Carell, J.K. Simmons and Patricia Arquette, have ever been nominated before.

2. The goodie bag is worth €50,000
The Oscar nominees who don’t go home with the big prize, will be consoled with a swag bag containing some €50,000 worth of goodies. In previous years that bag was sometimes worth double that amount but in recent years the American treasury has been keeping an eye on the bags as taxable income.

3. Meryl Streep may set a record
Acting legend Meryl Streep has been nominated for the 19^th time in her career, this time for her role in Into the Woods. If she wins, she will stand next to Katherine Hepburn, who was the only actress ever to receive four Oscars.

4. Oscar winners never really own the statue
Every Oscar winner must sign an agreement that if they ever want to sell their award, they first have to offer it to the Academy for $1. Before this rule was enforced, Steven Spielberg acquired Bette David’s Oscar for more than €500,000.

5. The best after-school job ever
The Kodak Theatre, where the Oscar ceremony is held, has 3,332 seats. And of course there are always people who don’t show up. The now famous seat fillers make it seem as if all seats are full for the amount of €100 per hour.

6. “And the Oscar goes to…”
“And the winner is…” is the phrase that was used to announce the Oscar winners until 1989. It has since been changed to “And the Oscar goes to…”, probably to make the losers feel better.

7. The 45 seconds rule
After the ceremony took over four hours in 2002, the organization introduced thed 45-seconds rule for thank you speeches. Stars who haven’t finished thanking their colleagues, mother and God after 45 seconds are brutally interrupted by the orchestra.
