HOW TO HANDLE:
curls in summer
You’d never guess because I have my hair straightened every week but I have a head full of curls. Not so happy with that, it a pain actually, because my curls seem to have a mind of their own. And when I’m on vacation, without the aid of a hairdresser, I look like a lion with dreadlocks. This is because curly hair has less moisture and the scales stick out more. Making it naturally frizzier. Which of course gets worse in the sun, so how do we tackle those curls in the summer?
Less washing
We all feel like we have to wash our hair everyday, or every two days. Don’t! Curly hair especially needs those oils on your scalp and too much washing eliminates this. Wash your hair about once or twice a week. Want to feel fresh? Use a dry shampoo. I recently discovered this delicious Bamboo product, the mango-coconut scent is divine.
The right products
It’s important you care for your hair using the right products. When that fine moment comes along that you can finally wash your hair make sure you use a product suited for frizzy or curly hair. Redken has a new Fizz Dismiss-line to keep those wild locks under control. I always apply a hair mask (to wet hair) and it’s soft as silk the next day. The day after you wash it with shampoo and a conditioner.
Styling
If you plan on styling your hair to get beautiful round curls instead of a limp wave, use a leave-in conditioner first. I use this one from Redken. After that I use a serum or spray. Guhl has a great hydrating spray very suitable for thicker curls. If you have very fine curls it’s better to use a mousse. KMS has a special mousse for this and it also protects your hair from heat. Finally you can shape your curls by putting some wax between your thumb and index finger and twisting the ends of your curls.
Haircuts
With curls getting it cut regularly and choosing a good model is very important. Layers have the edge as the different lengths bring out the best of your curls. It’s best to cut curly hair when it’s dry because you can see the result immediately.
No oil
When you are lying on the beach you might be tempted to use oil. This is the worst possible thing your hair could use because it dries out faster. Just use the serum mention in point three to hydrate your hair regularly.
No brushing
You are allowed to comb your hair, but do this only when your hair is wet. When it’s dry leave that brush where it is because you’ll just brush out those pretty curls. Your fingers are all you need to bring your hair into shape.
