The things the street style girls were already doing last year, most people have only just cottoned onto and now these styles are just simply the norm. About a light year ago it was known as the hipster knot, now it is commonly known as the top knot, is seen so frequently that it has lost it’s hipster value.
This does not mean that it’s no longer cool or can’t be worn. By no means, no. I myself am a die hard fan of the bun and even here amongst us editors the top knot is still a winner. So as you could imagine, we have heartily welcomed this half up half down trend.
To pull off this look, there are a few rules that need to be followed. It does seem very easy, but appearances can be deceiving. Okay, you might only be busy for a minute or two, so it doesn’t take that long, but it does take longer than a normal bun. Normally, you would hide a bad hair day in an all up knot, but with this style half of the hair hangs down and is on display. And that half of the hair must be perfectly beachy, somewhat curly and have a little shine. It can therefore be a relatively messy bun, but the rest must stay in balance. So here they come; the three golden rules to make the perfect half up, half down messy top knot.
Beach Spray and volumizing powder
This makes the hair just a touch stiffer, allows your knot to sit more securely and gives your hair a more natural looking wave.
Blow Dry
A good blow dry of the hair helps. That way the hair keeps it’s volume and doesn’t hang on you like a boring, lifeless mop.
Twist & Turn
Don’t try to make the bun messy immediately. This will only result in a bird’s nest rather than the messy bun we are aiming for. First you should make a neat bun and then pull out little tuffs out to get the look you want.
Waar de streetstyle meisjes het heus vorig jaar al deden, namen sommige mensen het lángzaam over en zie je nu eigenlijk gewoon iedereen op straat ermee rondlopen. Het was ooit, ik zeg lichtjaren geleden, een hipsterknotje, maar je kunt het nu ook gewoon het topknotje noemen, want inmiddels heeft het al geen hipsterwaarde mee.
Betekent niet dat het niet leuk meer is, neen, want ook op onze redactie is ‘ie doorgeslagen. Nu moet je weten dat ik dol ben op knotjes (oh, dat wist je nog niet? Ik verwijs je even hieren hiernaar), dus dit trendje van een half up half down-knotje werd zeer gewillig ontvangen. Met mij werd ook het enthousiasme door Jet, Lilian en Annick aangemoedigd, maar ik vind dat het kroontje toch wel naar onze vertaalster Elke mag die dat hipsterknotje de grootste allure geeft. Misschien komt het omdat ze het meest fantastische haar heeft, ze het weet te combineren met een spannende oranje lip en ze de meest knallende ogen van de redactie heeft, maar ook doordat het knotje gewoonweg perfect rommelig op haar hoofd hangt en niet doet vermoeden dat ze er best lang mee bezig is geweest.
Nu vind ik wel dat je aan een paar regeltjes moet voldoen om ‘m echt goed te dragen. Hij lijkt namelijk vrij simpel, maar schijn bedriegt. Dat beaamt Elke ook. Oké, je bent er misschien een minuutje mee bezig dus zo lang is het allemaal niet, maar het duurt langer dan een normaal knotje. Normaal werk je een bad hair day namelijk weg in een tótale knot, maar nu hangt de helft van je haar los. En die helft van het haar moet wel perfect beachy, ietwat curly en vooral glanzend zijn. Dat knotje mag dus heus messy, de rest moet in balans blijven. Dus daar komen ze; de drie gouden regels om de perfecte half up, half down messy topknot te maken.
Beachspray en volumepoeder
Dit maakt het haar nét even een tikkie stugger waardoor én je knot beter blijft zitten én je haar al wat natuurlijke waves mee krijgt.
Blow Dry
Een goede föhnbeurt helpt. Dan blijft er wel gewoon volume in je haar en hangt het niet als een saai dood futloos zooitje naar beneden.
Twist & Turn
Probeer niet meteen alles er heel rommelig uit te laten zien. Dan wordt het namelijk eerder een vogelnestje dan een rommelig knotje. Je kunt beter eerst een keurig knotje maken en dán wat plukjes eruit trekken in plaats van het nog terug te duwen om er überhaupt iets van te maken.
