7 x healthy snacks for the road
If you are reading this, there is a very good chance that I’m sitting in the car on my way to Paris. Liesbeth has sorted the music and I’ve packed the snacks. Of course we’ll stop four times at different French petrol stations to snoop around a bit (hey, a store is a store) and we’ll just have to buy a giant Toblerone bar or a baguette avec jambon et fromage, but I have also taken some goodies from home to munch on.
I also always do this when I have to catch a flight. It may very well be that the food in the left aisle is always a bit better the than it is on the right, but honestly, I’ve never received a tasty meal. “Would you like pasta or chicken?” Yeah okay, pasta, what kind of pasta? And I have no idea what’s in the little bowl on the left side of the tray, and I don’t want to know either. Usually I only take the bread roll with a little salted butter and slice of cheese wrapped in plastic. Of course you can easily throw a few ginger snaps, sultanas and crackers in your bag, but it can also be a little healthier.
Healthy snacks for on the road (and also customs-proof)
- A packet of (spelt) crackers, avocado and tomato. Makes for a very easy snack. Salt and pepper is in the little bags you get with your plastic cutlery.
- Make a sandwich at home (crackers go limp) and store them in tin foil.
- A bag of trail mix or unroasted nuts.
- A banana, fills you up and give you more energy.
- Boil some eggs. That is super filling and couldn’t be easier straight from the hand with a little salt and pepper. Delicious!
- Take your own tea bags, and ask just for boiling water. Often all you get on a flight is Earl Grey tea that is made way too strong. When going by car, don’t forget your thermos.
- I always take a few raw bars (https://amayzine.com/en/2014/daily-may-raw-bite-2/) while traveling. You can also make your own oatmeal bars:
What you need to make it:
- 150 grams of oatmeal
- 100g raisins
- 125 grams of raw chopped nuts
- 50 grams of seeds (linseed / sunflower seeds)
- 250ml almond milk
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- Agave syrup (optional)
- Grated coconut (optional)
1. Preheat oven to 180 degrees.
2. Mix all the ingredients with your hands or in a food processor (this is nicer I think)
4. Put the mixture in a baking tray which you’ve lined with baking paper.
5. 40 minutes in the oven.
6. Let it cool for at least an hour and cut into strips. Cut the bars however large or small as you like. Store them in a cookie jar or airtight container.
