When it comes to muesli or granola I can be a real nitpicker. I know there are those yummy crunchy types of granola but the reason they are so good is because they are overloaded with sugar. After a bowl of this stuff within an hour I’m craving something else or another serving. It’s not going to kill you, but I prefer to make my own granola. No hidden sugars or other crap. A few spoonfuls of homemade granola with a big dollop of Greek yoghurt, diced fruit and you’re set for the rest of the morning. Much more nutritious, more substantial and even tastier. Here’s the recipe I use. Make a up a big batch of it and keep it in a nice glass jar.

You will need:
The ingredients make about 8 to 10 servings. They can be found at the health food store.
200 grams of oatmeal
60g chopped nuts Buy any raw nuts that you find tasty, put them on a wooden board and chop. Decide for yourself how chunky or small you like them. I love a bit of bite, so I make mine chunky.
40 grams of seeds (eg, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds)
2 handfuls of dried fruit (cut into small pieces)
2 handfuls of dried coconut
4 tbsp coconut oil
1 tablespoon agave syrup (optional)
1 tablespoon cinnamon
Pinch of salt
– Preheat the oven to 150 degrees Celsius
– Put all the ingredients in a bowl except the coconut oil, coconut and dried fruits.
– Melt the coconut oil in a pan. If you’d like a slightly sweeter granola, then add a tablespoon of agave syrup.
– Pour the oil into the bowl with the dry ingredients. Mix well. This is best done with your (clean!) hands. It tends to be a bit of a sticky mess.
– Spread the mixture on a tray with baking paper and put it in the oven for 15 minutes. Occasionally take a look and possibly stir. If the granola is still looking pale, roast it a little longer. Be careful. It can burn quickly.
– Allow the granola to cool down and then add the pieces of dried fruits and coconut. Once everything is cooled put it in the jar. You can also use a Tupperware container of course.
