HOSTING THE BEST HOUSE PARTY
A SIMPLE HOW TO
Last week we had the wildest summer storm. Public transport came to a stand still, tree’s were uprooted, bikes blown over and festivals were cancelled. And that last thing was the best thing that could’ve happened to my weekend. Suddenly house parties sprung up like mushrooms. Nothing like being in a crowd of a hundred people dancing like mad in someone’s living room. But what is the ultimate formula for a successful house party?
The music
Seems quite logical, but music can make or break your party. A docking speaker system for your iPhone is fine for a little romantic background music, but for a pumping house party, it just won’t do. Hire a set of quality speakers and have your ultimate party playlist ready to go. Also make sure that people don’t just put their own music on uninvited. “The music is planned in for the whole evening.” Period.
Good lighting
Even if the space is ugly, with a disco ball or rotating colored lights, you immediately transform the gaudy room to an atmospheric party palace. You can also get balloons with LED lights in them. They cost next to nothing, are super cute and very festive, and not a fire hazard.
Another advantage of a dark room, is that people look great the whole night. They don’t call them the ugly lights for nothing.
Think of a theme
I’m a die hard fan of themed parties. Not just because you’re forced to think about an original outfit, but it also creates a sense of belonging. You also have an instant conversation piece. ‘Sooo where did you find your Superman costume?’
Create a hype
Make a Facebook event well in advance and every so often post a fun teaser. For example, give some hints about the theme or post some music clips from your rocking playlist. The party goers will be queuing at the door.
Plastic
I know, plastic cups are absolutely not chic, but they sure beat having shards of glass in your carpet or having to do a mountain of dishes the next day. It is possible to find some fun looking disposables though.
B.Y.O.B.
It might seem a bit tight, but I also ask people to bring their favorite drink along. This way you know that there are more than enough beverages to go around. In addition, sharing your favorite bottle of wine or mixing up a cocktail for someone else can be a fun way to bond.
