This is how models prepare for new york fashion week

And we have a lift off; New York Fashion Week is up and running. Young Dutch models are export products (along with Armin van Buren and iris van Herpen) and a large number of them have come to New York.

Daphne Groeneveld, our Maartje Verhoef, Maud Welzen, Julia van Os, Julia Bergshoef, Romée Strijd, Vera van Erp, Marjan Jonkman (the girl discovered by Paul Fisher in I can make you a supermodel) and the grand slams are Doutzen Kroes and Saskia de Brauw who will certainly be making a guest appearance at major shows. And you can bet every single one of them has come well prepared.

1. Quit the carbs

Don’t think that Mother Nature has provided each and every one of these models with a perfect body. Apart from the occasional tapeworm most of them have to do the work to maintain their measured 88 centimeter hips. Because models also have a life, they eat normally outside of the fashion season but a few weeks prior they avoid everything that is remotely connected to carbohydrates.

2. Long, Longer, Longest

Just before fashion week the workout regime is adapted to long muscles. The newest model phenomenon is SLT in English: strengthen, lengthen, tone. Here in New York that saying goes that if cardio, fitness and Pilates were to have a child; this is it.

3. Water, water, water

Good for the body but even better for the skin. The more you drink the less you perspire (which is great when running from runway to runway with no time to take a shower) and the smaller your pores will become. Read here how you can easily increase your water intake.

4. Bag of essentials

As a topmodel you are on the road all day. Check out the average day of Maartje Verhoef right here. Starting at 5am straight through to 1.30 am is no exception. So you basically need to take your life with you in your bag. That’s your set cards, your heels for castings, band aids for blisters, a refreshing deodorant, unroasted nuts as a healthy snack and an extra charger for your phone and of course a balm for your lips.

5. Moment of peace

Dutch girls are known for their tranquility and stability. You won’t see them pulling a Kate Moss-like stunt or making a fuss. You’ll sooner encounter an Instagram photo of a meditative moment involving a candle, a cup of tea and a rooftop view.
