artistic topknots
Loads of ‘undone’ topknots walked the catwalks last season. Knots with loose tendrils, elastics on show and actually most of the models looked like they had simply tied their own hair in a loose knot before work. I liked it, and it solved many a bad hair day and saved me time in the morning.
I’m about to disappoint you. Sadly. Or to make you happy. The undone ballerina-knot has left us and made place for the artwork. Also a knot, but definitely not one where you see clips or elastics. In fact, almost no loose pieces around. Quite an art really, as all of these knots are done creatively and weaved together. Makes me think of a brioche, one of those delicious breads with braided dough, with no beginning or end.
The knots seen at Nina Ricci, Pucci and Fetherson were all very neat. Low in the neck, hair polished (no hairspray or sticky hair) and indeed, zero clips seen. At Dolce & Gabbana and Bottega Veneta, the messier lady was spotted. The knots were still super chic, but with a tendril hanging loose here and there. Though all loose pieces were artistically woven. For the enthusiasts among us, I point you in the direction of the Marras show. This time with several knots on the head.
How to do it? Work with different strands, weave them together like a kind of braid. This way you won’t need to worry that it’ll fall apart. Twisted hair doesn’t usually stay in very well, but if you plait it first it will. And. Practise makes perfect. Here is a tutorial that will help matters, Believe me, I’ve tried it and in the beginning you’ll end up with loose pieces and bobby pins, but after a while you’ll get the hang of the artistic knot. Ha, and that was the whole point.
