How to become 100

A long and healthy life, in the end that is what everybody wants. And a lot of Sergio Rossi shoes and a new Chanel Boyfriend bag of course. The recipe for the last two is simple; save up and shop. But how to grow older, happily and healthily, that’s what I’ll explain to you now.

EMIGRATE

Apparently the Japanese and Sardinians have the oldest population. In Japan there once lived a woman named Misao Okawa and she experienced 117 trips around the sun. What’s the reason behind them reaching such an old age? The Japanese eat a lot of vegetables (out of their own gardens which I will refer back to later) and sweet potatoes. Allegedly very good for you. Why Sardinians tend to live lengthy lives? Read on a little further.

MOVE

Sardinians (especially those who become very old) live in very remote locations, with many hills, and they walk in these hills lots and lots. Hiking, walking, having your own vegetable garden; all of these take part in living a healthy lifestyle.

Don’t overeat

The Japanese and Sardinians usually only eat 80% of the intake their stomach can handle. You would probably eat less too if you were dining from things out of your own little vegetable garden. But if you learn to stop your food intake right before you feel full, it will help you out in the long run.

be kind to your family

That’s what you see with Sardinians, but also other small little towns or tight-knit communities. People care for one another and are kind. This causes less stress and a balanced life which is very good for your health.

become a seventh day adventist

I’m only kidding. But the group of Seventh Day Adventists that live in Loma Linda in the US, have the tendency of becoming very elderly. They don’t smoke and don’t drink, are close with one another and, something we should be doing to, they really take a day off to rest. No wifi, no TV. Just nature and perhaps even a good book. Oh and church of course.

Drink wine

Well isn’t this awfully great news. Wine is good for you. Albeit one glass a day and in the color red, but still.

become one with nature

Green scenery, the crashing of the waves, the rustling of the leaves in the trees… It all reduces stress and is good for the soul. What you can also contemplate doing is starting your own vegetable garden. That way you kill three birds with one stone. You’re being physical, you’re outdoors and you’re generating your own vegetables. And you’ll probably be eating those with more attention and love, leading to healthier food portions. Tadaa.

become religious

This doesn’t mean you automatically have to devote yourself to believing in God if you find that to be a step too far. It’s about thinking on a higher level, taking care of others and wishing them the best. It helps you put things into perspective and realize that you don’t have it so bad after all. This too leads to less stress.

DIGITAL DETOX

Having your cell phone on flight mode, a closed laptop and sand between your toes at least one day of the week. And a glass of red wine. Or two. I’ll allow it.
