LIESBETH and OLIVIA:
the final chapter
You don’t have to be the most loyal Amayzine reader to know I’m quite a fan of Olivia Palermo and her husband Johannes Huebl. Search under ‘Olivia Palermo’ on our site and the dozens of search results are probably all fanatical pieces by me. When we first went to the New York Fashion Week last February, my first thought was, ‘OMG, I’ve a chance of seeing her for real.’ Didn’t happen, and then came a long, LONG year full of disappointments and almost-but-not-quite meetings.
“This is so not funny was all I could say”
My hopes had sunk pretty low but once more in New York they lifted and I got the feeling it was finally gonna happen this week. It HAD to. The first day of this NYFW saw me with Jet at Lacoste and Joss and May backstage at Tibi; as you’ve already read. Around midday, May appeared on our New York app with the text, ‘Liesje…’ And then it happened. A photo of her with my Olivia backstage at Tibi. “This is not funny”, was all I could manage and when 10 minutes later a photo arrived from Joss who was interviewing her, it all got too much and for a while no one could come anywhere near me.
Being an adult, I got over it rea-son-ably soon, but I can tell you; I was not amused. It seems as if everyone else keeps bumping into her, but for me it’s NEVER GONNA HAPPEN – as I dramatically declared. The next day we went to DvF, a show where she was on the invitations list in any case. May was there too and I apped her to see if she had already spotted Olivia, but no. I was standing outside with camera and microphone taking interviews and then, then it happened.
Olivia came outside.
My heart stopped beating.
I HAVE TO DO SOMETHING – NOW
Olivia tends to speedily manoeuvre herself from door to vehicle, so in a split second I tore off my gloves and groped in my bag for my iPhone. ‘Olivia hi I’m so sorry but could I please take a picture with you?’, I heard myself gabble and she looked slightly irritated towards that huge pink microphone grasped in my hand and replied, “Uh yeah sure but without the mike.” And then hup camera hup photo and before I knew it she was in the car and it was all over.
BUT NOW I HAVE A PHOTO OF ME AND OLIVIA.
After a whole year, it’s finally happened. Now my life is complete and I can die happy: Olivia and I are officially BFFs.
