NEW YORK REPORT

May expands her vocabulary

Even tho’ I’ve been in New York quite a lot, every time I visit I learn some new words and phrases. Not always pleasant, but always fun. Last year ‘obsessed’ was the word of the Fashion Week and that summer anything remotely special was stamped ‘epic’ or ‘historic’. I’m still working out the word of this Fashion Week for you, but in the meantime I’ve picked up some New York phrases.

The B’s and T’s

A.k.a. the Bridge and Tunnel People. Anyone who doesn’t live on Manhattan and has to reach the city by tunnel or by bridge , a.k.a. un-cool types (tho’ you can be pretty cool in Brooklyn), a.k.a. the folks you must avoid. When the B’s and T’s have discovered your favorite hangout, then you know it’s time to look out for another place. And fast.

Instagrammable

Instagram is so obviously big that it’s earned its own adjective. Here in New York serious food journalists write that a restaurant is ’very Instagrammable’. That means it’s a photogenic place. And you have to admit that these days a beautiful picture is just about as important as the taste. Just about.

All Chanelled up

I’m afraid this phrase was made up just for me (just like you’re completely ‘Chanel-soaked’) by one of those charming Cipriani waiters at the Victoria Beckham show. Dress, bag and earrings were from my favourite label so this term didn’t exactly appear out of nowhere.

Now where was I… On the road to new adventures and words of course!
