Meanwhile in Cannes…
Obviously the films are very important but what’s happening on the red carpet is our top priority. It’s been debated Cannes is the prettiest, most glamorous red carpet experience of them all and these ladies sure put in an effort to prove that point. Special shout out today for:
Natasha Poly, the Russian face of L’Oréal Paris, who took home the best dressed crown two nights in a row. First she sparkled in a gold sequin gown by Micheal Kors followed by an even more impressive design by Versace. The naked-is-the-new-black trend is nothing new on the red carpet but seldom did someone pull it off this stylish and awesome as Natasha.
Cate Blanchett not only wowed with her role in Palme D’or contester Carol but made headlines with her elaborate ‘twisted fairy tale’ gown by Brit designer Giles Deacon. And finally Jane Fonda who never seizes to amaze us every time she shows up. The 77-year-old veteran actress and L’Oréal Paris ambassador looked ageless and stunning in blue Versace.
After all the praising as well as controversial buzz surrounding Amy we can’t wait to see Asif Kapadia’s documentary about the late Amy Winehouse for ourselves. The Hollywood Reporter called it ‘an emotionally stirring and technically polished tribute, its sprawling mass of diverse source material elegantly cleaned up, color-corrected and shaped into a satisfying narrative.’ The Guardian reviewed it as ‘stunningly moving and powerful: intimate, passionate, often shocking, and almost mesmerically absorbing.’ While Amy’s father Mitch Winehouse, portrayed in the film as a stage dad who advised his daughter against going to rehab, calls it ‘misleading’ and ‘biased’.
Not everyone can count on praises in Cannes. Gus van Sant’s The Sea of Trees starring Matthew McConaughey en Naomi Watts actually got booed after the premiere screening of the film and has been roundly trounced by the press. The ever optimistic naked bongo player responded to the negative critique as follows:
“Anyone has as much right to boo as they do to ovate,” he said. “I’m happy to be here. I like the film. It was a happy day to hear that it had got in. It’s exciting to come support work that I got to do with these people. This is fun, this is dessert – no matter what. We’ve declared now; thanks for having us. We enjoyed it.”
