OMG the gel nail is back
A long long time ago, back when I still worked for TV, all my female coworkers had long fake nails. As did I. You know what I mean, those perfectly shaped square nails that caused us to use a pen when we had to use keyboards.
Once every two weeks or so you would drop by some nail salon that reeked of chemicals and spend an eternity with your hands under one of those ultraviolet lamps.
And to be honest, those nails made everyday things in life a lot harder than they should be. Making your bed was a disaster (try perfectly aligning a sheet on your bed with 3 cm nails) and let’s just say long nails and tampons weren’t the best of friends either.
Plus, it’s an expensive and time consuming hobby (and then I haven’t even mentioned the state you’re in when a nail breaks) and so you could catch me dancing on tables and hanging from chandeliers as soon as I heard that short nails were back in fashion. File them all the way down to the tip of your finger, add a bit of color, and you were good to go.
The past five years I have been living in the perfect nail century since long nails and I are far from a perfect match. Yet I couldn’t help but spot the occasional acrylic nail every now and then. Usual suspects at first (think long fake platinum blonde hair and bright pink lips) but then I caught some of our interns (you won’t find any cooler ones than ours) rocking the long look too.
And then last Thursday I was a guest at a late night TV show alongside Dutch model Kim Feenstra, a girl incapable of making a fashion faux pas. Perfect jeans, casual but perfect blouse, and…yeah you guessed it. Long acrylic nails. Polished in a perfect shade of nude but they were long and point. And the worst part of al was…I actually liked them.
So we’re off. Back to the chemical, time consuming and costly nail era.
