optimize your packing skills

Off to spend a couple of days discovering a new city? Then hand luggage will suffice. But for anyone planning a longer trip, checking in a suitcase is necessary. Nothing new I’m presuming. But imagine: you need to pack an overflow of clothes because well, you might be, let’s say, spending two weeks in New York and it just so happens that one of those weeks is Fashion Week. Well, then you need to be crafty and smart and find a way to pack as much as you can.

Two suitcases

Check one in and use the other for hand luggage. Don’t go for a cute little purse, no opt for a trolley. This way you can stuff it with as much stuff as you need. I never used to do this (God knows why) but ever since I started it’s been such a weight (aka packing stress) off my shoulders. You could also keep the trolley empty in case you trip has a lot of shopping trips on the agenda.

rolling things up

I’m sure we’ve brought this up before but we can’t say it enough. Don’t fold your clothes, roll them up! More room to stuff things into your suitcase.

use your shoes and bags

Tagging along shoes and bags can be the hardest since they take up the most room. But use that room by filling up your shoes with underwear or shirts, and you can put other items of clothing into your bags too. Not only are you making optimal use of the space, you’re also avoiding any ugly dents which may occur.

no big bottles

Leave. Your. Shampoo. At. Home. Even if you are planning on checking in your bag. Go for the smaller travel sized bottles (you can buy these at most drug stores). It saves up room and weight.

Plan your outfits

Last but not least, spend an evening trying out a bunch of different outfits in front of your mirror. This way you’ll know what to bring and what you will for sure be wearing.
