It’s going to be a tough summer for skinny-lovers. For the coming summer and going through to fall (thanks to the Haute Hippie Hype) you will have to bid your super tight cigarette stalks a firm good-bye. The bell-bottom trousers, aka “flared” trousers are definitely the new option.
Although there is talk of the revival of the “flared” the way they are worn has totally changed. If you’re thinking shabby comfortable seventies think again. Back then it was flats or plateau shoes now it’s sneakers or flip-flops, though some occasions ask for more. They require the new flared to be worn with flair. That means super feminine and elegant. So you need shoes that will sustain your air of self-confidence. The question arises: which shoes?
What Shoes to combine with the flared?
Plateaus
Open or with ankle straps, plateaus are the way to go. It’s doesn’t matter how colorful, plain or decorated they areas long as they’re not flat. The plateau is relatively comfortable, so have at least two pairs in your closet. The hem of your trousers should fall straight down; cover the shoe (okay, bit of a waste) partially or entirely. Just make sure it doesn’t fall short.
Block heels
This model made their international comeback during Fashion Week. The higher the heel the greater the response. The flared goes well with this shoe because besides from being comfortable they add length. Finding the right model to suit you shouldn’t be a problem. They come in all shapes and sizes.
Pumps
Honestly you can never go wrong with pumps. Of course they looked great with your skinnies but with the flared it’s a match made in heaven. In short: a pump is a must-have in your collection, so invest in a good pair. If your flared are jeans, combining them with pumps creates a surprising contrast between cool and elegant. Tip: let the tips of your pumps peek out from under your trousers.
Sandals
If this model comes with a plateau, block heel or queenie doesn’t matter, as long as they’re not flat. Sandals are a spring and summer favorite, that means lock up your closed-toed shoes. The heel has to be high enough so that the hem stops just above the ground. And… assuming your toes will peep out, make sure they’re all neat and varnished.
Ankle boots
As long as we can’t use the term “heat wave” it’s ankle boots (with heel, naturally). Besides, if your flared are a tad short, ankle boots can hide this perfectly.
We end with a fitting tip:
When going shopping for a new pair of flared, bring your shoes to determine the right length.
