PORNO AND PORNA A TABOO?

For two consecutive years I’ve been writing my weekly Sexy Friday columns with cover some of the most diverse topics. From orgasmic mushrooms to colorful condoms and from porn festivals to sex selfie sticks. Last week I wrote an article about the best porn sites for women and that yielded some surprising insights.

We hardly ever get many comments or likes on our Facebook Sexy Friday updates which is rather surprising because those are precisely the updates that get the most clicks. I’m the admin for our Facebook account so I can see the exact number of people that click on our links and how many comments and likes we have. Usually all these factors are well balanced out but when it comes to the sex posts, the amount of likes and comments are no where near the amount of people that read the post.

Take the porn sites for women from last week for example. At first there were zero likes and a few comments however the post itself skyrocketed to our list of best read articles of the week in no time. In the Amayzine statistics we can even see that it is one of the best read articles ever, although our Facebook account only received 17 likes. Conclusion: people read it, exceedingly even, but no one wants people to know that they’re reading it. And that surprises me. Are sex and porn still a taboo?

One of the few comments we received (on our Dutch Facebook page) was from a guy, a rather good looking one too might I add who seemed to be a regular boy, who wrote the following: “I bet this was written by some lame single 30 year old who lives with a bunch of cats…” Okay, so is he trying to say that the only women who look at porn are lame single women? And what does that even mean in regards to the men walking around on this planet? Are they too lame and single? Cause if there is one thing that’s for sure, it’s that all men, despite what they say, watch porn. Then shouldn’t that be considered lame too?

After a short inquiry with a group of my friends, I learnt that everyone watches porn (except for one friend who claimed they didn’t but we all know better). We talked about it openly but more in a more general way. “No details, only if you prefer watching it with or without a guy on the screen. If you mind watching anal yes or no.” And someone even made the remark that porn has become so mainstream that discussing the topic of porn isn’t as exciting as it used to be. But regardless, absolutely no one had an issue with this porn and nobody classified as lame.

I’m lacking a bit of the sociological knowledge to give a concrete answer as to why this is the way it is, but it was just something I noticed. Whether I write about awkward experiences with sex toys or the most gruesome stories told by porn stars, masses of people (women) read the articles, but hell no will they ever be caught doing so. But hey, it’s okay. It’s our little secret.
