The 5 rules to getting dressed for a gala

Last week my phone rang. It was a friend of mine who works for the Dutch television and she was absolutely clueless as to what she should wear for an award show. And she was nominated for an award. Team May-Britt to the rescue.

With a few more months until the award show season begins (think Oscars, think Golden Globes), it’s best to know the do’s and don’t for when you get dressed for a gala. So voilà, here a few things you should keep in mind.

1.     It doesn’t have to be floor length

We’re talking about a black tie event here. It’s okay if you want to wear something long, but a cocktail length (knee length) is fine too. And if you’re attending the Met Ball, then the crazier the better obviously.

2.     Leave your watch at home

When you’re at a gala or a ball, time is of zero importance. If you’re having a great time, don’t spoil it by continuously checking the digits on your watch. Cinderella didn’t either and she had the time of her life (minus having to rush last minute but that’s a detail we’ll just ignore).

3.     Jewelry

The more, the better. And gloves are also a great asset too but remember that if you’re wearing rings, wear them underneath and not on top.

4.     Finish it off

Don’t finish off your look with a pair of worn out heels. Cause even if you think people won’t see them, they will. So invest in a good pair of shoes and don’t forget to bring her purse. Preferably one that’s so small it’ll fit no more than your cell phone.

5.     Through the car wash

Your dress might be breath taking, but if you’re walking around with a birds nest on your head, it won’t matter. Book an appointment for a blow out and ask if your hair stylist can also add on a few fake lashes. And don’t forget to add a bit of lotion on your arms, legs and cleavage.

To top it all off, spray on a bit of perfume and make sure you don’t forget to use a bit of deodorant…
