MOISTURIZE

– the right way –

Even though I’m a beauty editor with more than quite a few pots and tubes on my dressing table, I also have some difficulties knowing what should and should not be used and when. Serums, day creams, night creams; enough to keep you busy for hours and then in the evening you repeat it all over again. This is not at all the case. The most important thing to know is how to get the order of application correct to help the products that you use do their jobs properly. Everything in its right order.

Cleanse

Cleansers also come in all shapes and sizes, but cleaning is really the basis for the creaming process. You can smear what you want, but if your skin is not clean, it’s like when a painter sets to work on an already daubed canvas. With a foam cleanser you clean your skin and with a tonic you close your pores again so that no more dirt gets in.

Eye serum

No, it is not nonsense to use a separate serum for your eyes. The skin around your eyes is much thinner, thus more sensitive and therefore needs a different care. Massage it well so as to stimulate blood circulation and reduce the risk of hefty bags under the eyes.

Face serum

The point of a serum is to bring the moisture in the skin back to normal. It therefore gives a boost and this is the sort of starting layer we want. A well-hydrated skin immediately gives a clear shine and radiates good health. Dry skin? After using a serum you can you apply as much make up as you want and you’ll instantly see a difference. A serum is actually a basic product that everyone should have.

Cream

After the serum apply your day cream or night cream. The serum is thoroughly absorbed by the skin and a cream has active ingredients that can complement that. Optionally you can then add another drop of oil for an extra nourishing accent, but that is purely if you feel fine with having the extra oil on your skin and if your skin is screaming for it.

Primer

I was wondering if I had to put this in the rituals of applying makeup post or does it also fit here with the care and cleansing ritual. I chose the latter. A primer has predominantly active ingredients that help benefit the skin, but obviously it works differently than a day cream. A primer works as a first base layer of makeup, so everything stays put. It also helps to fix the cream and serum layer that you have already applied.
