this is what you wear to a wedding
Last week while giving style advice at an Omoda pop-up store I expected questions in the line of; what shoes to wear with culottes or what shoes work with boyfriend jeans. But nine out of ten questions were about weddings.
Almost everyone had a few weddings coming up (no still not mine) and asked me: What should I wear?
not white
I must admit I did goof up once. I wore a beautiful champagne colored dress and my love accompanied me in the same color suit. I can’t believe it never occurred to me that I looked like a bride and I blame my mother for not warning me. So for the record, for those who are just as bright as me, white is off limits. Bride only. Just to keep it simple ban all shades beige and nude as well.
not red
It’s all about not outshining the bride. White might be cutting it too close and red might be too distractive and draw too much unwanted attention. So don’t.
not black
Black is for funerals. A wedding is typically a happy gathering. There’s no need for black cats.
Yes, you can wear…
Pastels are the fashion this season. I find it very flattering if you chose one color for your whole outfit. Jacket, dress, bag and maybe even tights, all in the same color, make a very chic statement. Green can look pretty or a sturdy shade of yellow. For the more modest among you dark blue is an option. You can spice it up with a colorful corsage.
Accessorize
It’s nice to go all the way for a wedding. It’s a festive occasion. A person only marries once (or two or three times) in a lifetime. I love hats but it’s possible they make you feel uneasy. In that case the accessories by Maison Michel are the perfect solution. They are attached to a hairband so it isn’t constantly in your range of vision.
a small bag
There are a lot of women who only have one bag. They bring it with them to work, to the playground and to a wedding. A definite no go. Leave that old thing at home. Go with a playful clutch that goes with your outfit or take a classic Chanel or Vuitton. Can’t afford a designer piece? There are other options like rewear, where you can rent a bag or maybe you can borrow one from a friend.
clean shoes
Diana Vreeland always has the bottom of her shoes polished so they’re nice and proper. I am often surprised at the amount of people with new shoes at weddings (douze points) but most of them forget to remove stickers and price tags. Check them beforehand.
tights
There seems to be an age gap when we come to the subject of tights or pantyhose. Peggy is pro tights and Liesbeth loves them if they make a statement. I say, if it’s a hot day leave them off (do pamper you legs with cacao butter or Nuxe). Otherwise chose a fitting pair to match your outfit. Skin tones are prohibited no matter how many times the lady behind the counters says they’re invisible.
have your hair done
Don’t try to do this yourself. Just make an appointment at the hairdressers. It will cost you no more that 40 euros and you know you will look good all day. No need to stuff a brush in that tiny bag of yours.
outspoken
You may not be allowed to outshine the bride but you can certainly show your love by putting in the effort. You can be a little outspoken. A low cut back for example (wear a jacket in church) or a floral dress or a top with wide sleeves. The title belle of the ball is spoken for but why not go for runner up?
